Chapter 11 - WHY NATHAN WAS REALLY KILLEDThe first real evidence came from an accountant.

Her name was Evelyn Shaw.
Retired.
Seventy-three.
Nathan had interviewed her during his audit of a Vance subsidiary.
Grant located her in Maine.
Dominic did not attend.
His presence might frighten her.
Riley did.
Evelyn opened door and immediately recognized surname.
“Dawson?”
Riley nodded.
“You’re Nathan’s girl.”
Riley's throat tightened.
“You knew him?”
“He saved my life.”
Not literally.
Evelyn invited them in.
Years earlier she worked at Kade Urban Holdings, a company Vincent controlled through Vance network.
She noticed payments to security contractors tied to intimidation complaints.
Properties acquired after owners withdrew objections.
Witnesses who suddenly recanted.
Nothing alone proved murder.
Together they formed pattern.
Nathan came as auditor.
He listened.
Unlike others.
Evelyn gave him copies.
Nathan discovered Vincent had created shadow structure using Dominic's feared reputation.
People believed refusing Vincent meant refusing Dominic.
Dominic did not order.
But his name opened doors fearfully.
Nathan planned to tell him.
Then stopped.
“Why?” Riley asked.
Evelyn looked.
“Because Nathan found evidence someone in Dominic’s office was forwarding internal complaints directly to Vincent.”
“Meaning?”
“He could not trust anyone around Dominic.”
Grant's jaw tightened.
“Did he say who?”
“No.”
“He said: ‘If I go straight to Vance and wrong person hears first, my daughter becomes leverage.’”
Riley closed eyes.
Exactly.
Nathan stayed away not because he did not trust Dominic.
Because he feared Dominic’s circle.
Evelyn continued.
Nathan contacted federal investigators.
A meeting was scheduled.
He never made it.
His car crashed night before.
Riley whispered:
“They killed him.”
Evelyn nodded sadly.
“I always believed so.”
“Why didn’t you say?”
“I did.”
“To who?”
“An investigator.”
“What happened?”
“Case disappeared.”
Grant looked.
“Name?”
Evelyn provided.
The investigator retired suddenly months later.
Dominic later learned his wife received unexplained settlement through firm linked to Vincent.
The pattern sharpened.
Nathan had not died because of old war enemy.
He died because he found rot inside Dominic’s own empire.
When Dominic received report, he sat alone.
Grant stood.
Riley watched.
Dominic said:
“He was trying to protect me too.”
Riley:
“What?”
“If Nathan exposed Vincent publicly without warning, everything tied to my name would collapse.”
“He was trying to bring me proof privately.”
“And died before.”
Riley stared.
“So my dad died protecting a crime boss?”
Dominic flinched.
She regretted wording instantly.
But truth was close.
Dominic answered:
“He died trying to stop crimes.”
“Whatever protection I received was secondary.”
Riley nodded.
Then:
“You could have known.”
“Yes.”
“If you had listened when he came.”
“Yes.”
No excuses.
Riley’s anger needed somewhere.
Dominic allowed himself to be that place.
Finally she asked:
“What now?”
Grant placed file.
“Saint Michael’s Ridge.”
Dominic looked.
“We go tomorrow.”
Riley:
“What’s there?”
May you like
Dominic's expression hardened.
“The second half of whatever Nathan thought was worth dying for.”
