Chapter 15 - RILEY WAS NEVER THE TARGET AT FIRSTThe truth about Riley’s childhood came from Vincent’s old employee.

Calvin Reese, former security contractor.
He agreed to speak after investigators approached.
He had been paid years ago to locate Nathan’s property.
Not harm child.
At least that was what he claimed.
Riley watched recorded interview.
Calvin:
“We wanted a key.”
“Dawson had evidence.”
“Vincent believed he hid copies in places tied to military past.”
“Why Riley?”
“Because Nathan moved everything after becoming father.”
“He stopped using obvious storage.”
“Vincent thought daughter might know.”
Riley whispered:
“I didn’t.”
Grant:
“They assumed.”
Calvin explained early surveillance.
School.
Guardian.
Home.
Men asked questions.
When Marissa became financially vulnerable, they paid her.
When Riley denied knowledge, pressure increased.
Vincent’s orders:
“Scare her enough to remember.”
Riley stopped recording.
Dominic sat beside, not touching.
She breathed slowly.
“So those men…”
“Yes.”
“They weren’t random.”
“No.”
“Dean?”
Grant checked.
“Likely connected indirectly.”
Riley laughed bitterly.
“My whole childhood was evidence search.”
Dominic's face filled with grief.
“You were supposed to be a child.”
She turned.
“Where were you?”
Question returned.
Dominic answered same.
“Not where I should have been.”
Riley stood.
“I need air.”
Grant went to follow.
Dominic stopped him.
“Give her space, keep sight.”
Riley walked balcony of protected apartment.
City below.
For years she believed suffering was because she was unlucky.
Now it was inheritance.
Nathan’s enemies had been reaching into her life before she understood.
That made scars heavier.
But also changed one thing.
She was not broken because there was something wrong with her.
Adults had failed her systematically.
Not same as fault.
Dominic came out after several minutes.
Kept distance.
Riley said:
“I don’t want his evidence.”
“Nathan’s?”
“Yes.”
“Burn it.”
Dominic:
“No.”
She turned furious.
“Why?”
“Because then Vincent wins.”
“I don’t care.”
“You don’t have to care.”
“Then burn.”
Dominic shook head.
“The evidence belongs to investigation now.”
“Not you.”
“Not me.”
“You don’t have to carry it.”
Riley stared.
“You’re taking it away?”
“No.”
“I’m taking responsibility away.”
That mattered.
Nathan had told Riley not to fight his war.
Dominic finally understood.
She could help if she chose.
But not be weapon.
Riley asked:
“What if I want to testify?”
“Then we protect that choice.”
“What if I don’t?”
“Then you don’t.”
She looked.
“You really mean that?”
“Yes.”
“Even if it hurts case?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan died trying to keep you from becoming leverage.”
“I will not turn you into leverage for revenge.”
Riley’s eyes filled.
Dominic looked away to give privacy.
After while she whispered:
“I want to know who killed him.”
Dominic:
“So do I.”
“I want to hear them admit.”
“That may not happen.”
“I know.”
“But I want truth.”
Dominic nodded.
“Truth we can pursue.”
Riley looked at scars.
“And after?”
Dominic smiled sadly.
“After, you get to have boring problems.”
“Like?”
“School.”
“Taxes.”
“Bad dates.”
Riley grimaced.
“That sounds terrible.”
“It is.”
For first time, future sounded possible.
Then Grant entered.
“Dominic.”
“What?”
“We found Nathan's cabin.”
“The key from first case matches old lockbox recovered there.”
Riley stood.
“What’s inside?”
Grant looked directly at her.
May you like
“A recording.”
“Made the night before Nathan died.”
