Chapter 12 - Claire’s Last EvidenceClaire had hidden a storage envelope in the hospital’s pathology department.

Not under her own name.
Under Melissa Granton’s.
The dead woman.
Police secured the hospital.
Adrian was not there.
Yet.
The envelope contained tissue samples.
Copies of medication administration records.
And a handwritten statement from Claire.
If I die during delivery, test my blood for oxytocin overdose and anticoagulant contamination.
Malcolm stared.
Grant went pale.
Retained blood samples from Claire’s death still existed.
Emergency testing began.
Hours later:
Abnormal anticoagulant concentration.
Potentially contributing to hemorrhage.
Someone may have caused or worsened her bleeding.
Malcolm’s grief transformed.
Claire had been murdered.
Not proven yet legally.
But enough.
The nurse Rebecca Lane’s records became critical.
Interpol coordination intensified.
Then hospital security reported a man trying to access old maternity records.
Not Adrian.
A hospital executive.
Dr. Peter Sloan.
Malcolm knew him.
He had delivered Asher.
Grant arrested Sloan for obstruction after finding him deleting files.
Under questioning, Sloan cracked quickly.
Adrian paid him.
Not to kill Claire.
To delay intervention.
Rebecca administered medication.
Sloan delayed escalation.
The plan, according to him, was supposed to frighten Claire.
Create complications.
Force Malcolm to rely on Adrian for support.
But Claire deteriorated too fast.
Malcolm stared through interview glass.
Again.
Everyone claimed they didn’t intend the final harm.
Rebecca.
Sloan.
Maybe Adrian.
Each made one choice.
Then another.
Then another.
Until Claire died.
“What did Adrian want from Claire?” Grant asked.
Sloan answered:
“The Hale archive.”
“She didn’t have it.”
“We know that now.”
“Then why kill her?”
“I told you—”
Malcolm entered despite Grant’s warning.
“You let her die.”
Sloan looked down.
“I panicked.”
Malcolm almost laughed.
That word.
Again.
Fear.
Panic.
Always arriving after the choice.
“Did she ask for help?”
Sloan closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
No answer.
Malcolm stepped closer.
“What did my wife say?”
Sloan whispered:
“Please don’t let my baby lose his mother.”
Malcolm felt something break.
He turned away.
That was enough.
Outside, Eleanor waited under federal protection.
She looked at Malcolm.
“What happened?”
“Claire knew.”
“I know.”
“She tried to protect Asher.”
“Yes.”
“And you knew she was in danger.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled.
“I warned her.”
“But not me.”
“No.”
Malcolm looked at her.
“Why did none of you trust me?”
She flinched.
“It wasn’t that.”
“It was exactly that.”
“I thought telling you would make you a target.”
“I was already a target.”
“Yes.”
“You just made me a blind one.”
Silence.
Eleanor looked down.
“You’re right.”
That stopped him.
No defense.
No explanation.
Just:
“You’re right.”
Malcolm’s anger remained.
But something shifted.
Then Eleanor said:
“Claire loved you.”
Malcolm looked away.
“She told me.”
“When?”
“Before Asher was born.”
“What did she say?”
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“She said the mission ended the night you stayed awake holding Jasper through a fever.”
Malcolm remembered.
Claire had slept on the hallway floor because Jasper refused to be alone.
“That’s when she decided she couldn’t keep reporting to Adrian.”
Malcolm swallowed.
“She chose us.”
“Yes.”
“And he killed her.”
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
A phone rang.
Grant answered.
Then looked toward them.
“We have Adrian.”
Malcolm stood.
“Where?”
“At Tampa International.”
“Leaving?”
“No.”
Grant’s expression was strange.
“He was arriving.”
Malcolm frowned.
“From where?”
“Washington.”
“Why would he come back?”
Grant held up a small evidence bag.
Inside was a flash drive found in Adrian’s coat.
“He came back to negotiate.”
“With what?”
Grant looked toward Eleanor.
“A list of every child Bright Harbor moved.”
Eleanor’s face went white.
“That’s not possible.”
“Why?”
May you like
She whispered:
“Because that list includes Jasper.”
