Chapter 8 - The Safe Deposit BoxPolice moved quickly after the call.

The burner ping narrowed to a motel outside Savannah.

Local officers arrived.

Room empty.

No blood.

No struggle obvious.

But Eleanor’s phone remained on the floor.

Back window open.

One shoe left behind.

Malcolm nearly lost control.

“She was taken.”

Grant said, “We don’t know.”

“She didn’t leave one shoe intentionally.”

“No.”

Malcolm wanted to drive there.

Instead, Grant convinced him the safest move was Jacksonville.

If Adrian wanted the archive, the box might be the reason Eleanor was found.

Two officers escorted Malcolm.

At the bank, the brass key worked.

The safe deposit box belonged to Malcolm’s father under a private trust.

Inside:

Three encrypted hard drives.

Paper ledgers.

Photographs.

Audio tapes.

And one sealed letter addressed to Malcolm.

He opened it.

Son,

If you are reading this, then I failed to clean up a mess I helped create.

Malcolm stopped.

His father?

He continued.

Adrian Cole and I founded Bright Harbor together.

His stomach dropped.

He had always thought Adrian started it alone.

We believed private money could move children out of broken systems faster than government bureaucracy. At first, we helped.

Malcolm read slowly.

Then wealthy people began asking for exceptions.

Placement preferences.

Expedited guardianships.

Sealed files.

I told myself shortcuts were acceptable because children reached good homes.

His hands shook.

That was the first lie.

Then came money.

Parents who wanted inconvenient custody disputes solved.

Foreign families wanting U.S. records.

Executives hiding children from affairs.

People trying to manipulate inheritance.

The foundation became a machine for identity alteration.

Malcolm’s father claimed he tried to leave.

Adrian threatened exposure.

If Bright Harbor fell, Malcolm’s father would fall too.

So he stayed silent.

Years.

Until Eleanor discovered accounting discrepancies.

She confronted him.

He finally told her everything.

Malcolm stared.

“Eleanor knew before Dad died.”

Grant nodded.

The letter continued.

Eleanor is braver than I was. That is why I fear Adrian will destroy her.

Malcolm’s throat tightened.

His father had predicted it.

I created an archive. Every payment. Every child whose identity I could recover. Every official who assisted.

“The list,” Malcolm whispered.

Grant leaned closer.

Yes.

The children.

Not merely victims.

Evidence.

The archive included real names and substituted identities.

Some children were now adults.

Some families had no idea.

Some did.

Malcolm felt nauseated.

“How many?”

Grant began counting database folders.

“Hundreds.”

He sat.

Hundreds of lives.

Then they found Eleanor’s section.

Videos.

One dated two weeks before the crash.

Eleanor appeared on screen.

“If Malcolm sees this…”

She stopped.

Took a breath.

“I’m sorry.”

Malcolm leaned closer.

“I wanted to tell you.”

Her eyes were red.

“But your father made me promise until he could secure Jasper.”

Malcolm’s heart tightened.

“Adrian has access to people inside family court, hospitals, police records, and private investigators.”

Grant’s face hardened.

Eleanor continued.

“Melissa Granton found records proving Adrian began using deceased women’s identities in staged transfers.”

Malcolm swallowed.

“Melissa thinks he plans to make me disappear.”

Then:

“If something happens to me, Malcolm, do not trust the first body they give you.”

Malcolm closed his eyes.

He had.

He had trusted the body.

The dental record.

The ring.

Everything.

Eleanor continued.

“Claire Benton may contact you.”

Malcolm froze.

“She works for Adrian.”

His jaw tightened.

“But I don’t think she believes in what he’s doing anymore.”

Malcolm stared.

Eleanor had known Claire before Malcolm ever met her.

“She may be the only person close enough to Adrian to help.”

Then the video ended.

Grant looked at Malcolm.

“Claire may have approached you intentionally.”

“Yes.”

“But possibly to protect you.”

“I don’t know.”

That uncertainty hurt.

He had loved Claire.

Now every memory had two versions.

Love.

Mission.

Maybe both.

Then a second video loaded.

Claire.

Pregnant.

Eight months.

Recorded secretly.

“I don’t know who will find this.”

Malcolm stopped breathing.

Claire looked terrified.

“Adrian knows I helped Eleanor.”

Malcolm gripped the table.

“He thinks I have Thomas Hale’s archive.”

Thomas.

Malcolm’s father.

“I don’t.”

Claire placed a hand on her stomach.

“I’m using Eleanor’s protected dependent identity for my baby.”

That document.

“Because if Adrian takes him, I need there to be a record he cannot easily erase.”

Malcolm’s eyes filled.

Claire continued.

“Malcolm thinks this baby is safe because he thinks Adrian loves this family.”

She began crying.

“I don’t know how to tell him the man he calls Uncle Adrian helped destroy both his wives.”

Malcolm covered his face.

Both wives.

Then Claire said:

“If anything happens to me during delivery…”

May you like

Malcolm looked up.

“…do not assume it was an accident.”
