Chapter 9 - Claire’s Death Was ReopenedClaire had died from postpartum hemorrhage.

That was the official record.
Rare.
Tragic.
Possible.
But now Grant ordered every medical file preserved.
The hospital records showed strange inconsistencies.
A medication entered under one nurse’s login.
An unusual delay before a second physician was called.
A security-camera outage in one corridor.
Malcolm stared at the timeline.
“Was she murdered?”
“We don’t know.”
“Say what you think.”
Grant looked at him.
“I think her death deserves a new investigation.”
Malcolm’s anger became almost unbearable.
He remembered holding newborn Asher while doctors told him Claire was gone.
Adrian arrived within forty minutes.
Too fast.
Malcolm hadn’t called him.
He assumed hospital staff did.
Now he wondered.
“Check Adrian’s location that night.”
Already done.
Phone records placed him two blocks from the hospital before Claire’s condition deteriorated.
Malcolm went cold.
“He was there.”
“Yes.”
“Why wasn’t that in the original file?”
“Nobody asked.”
Of course.
No one suspected him.
Trusted men lived inside gaps people never examined.
Then investigators identified the hospital nurse whose login was used.
Rebecca Lane.
Former Bright Harbor medical coordinator.
She left Florida the day after Claire died.
Malcolm stared.
“Find her.”
Federal investigators did.
Mexico.
No extradition yet.
But lawyers began working.
Meanwhile Eleanor remained missing.
Then Winifred asked to speak with Malcolm again.
This time he almost refused.
Jasper had told him more.
Winifred had been increasingly cruel for weeks.
Snapping.
Punishing.
Rough handling.
The slap was the only incident caught clearly.
Malcolm could understand fear.
He would not erase harm.
He entered.
Winifred looked exhausted.
“Do you hate me?”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
Fair.
“I hated myself before you arrived.”
“That doesn’t help Asher.”
“No.”
“Why did you hit him?”
Winifred looked down.
“Because I had been awake for almost two days.”
“That is not an excuse.”
“No.”
“Because you were scared?”
“Yes.”
“Still not an excuse.”
“I know.”
Malcolm almost stopped her from saying it.
Then didn’t.
Winifred continued.
“Eleanor told me Adrian might come for the boys today.”
“Why today?”
“She didn’t say.”
“The archive?”
“Maybe.”
“Then why pack?”
“To leave before noon.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Asher wouldn’t eat. Jasper couldn’t find his shoes. I panicked.”
“And hit a baby.”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
Malcolm stared.
“You don’t get to use helping us as payment for that.”
“I’m not.”
Good.
At least that.
“What is the sixty thousand?”
“Emergency money from Eleanor.”
“Where did she get it?”
“I don’t know.”
“And my ten thousand?”
“I took it.”
“So you did steal.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought we might need cash.”
Malcolm’s jaw tightened.
“You could have called me.”
“No.”
“Because Eleanor told you not to.”
“Yes.”
“You chose her over me.”
Winifred looked at him.
“I chose the children.”
“No.”
Malcolm leaned forward.
“You chose what you believed was best without telling their father.”
Silence.
“That is what everyone in this family keeps doing.”
His father.
Eleanor.
Claire.
Winifred.
All hiding truth “for protection.”
And Adrian used the silence.
“What did Eleanor say about today?”
Winifred thought.
“She said a court order might come.”
Malcolm frowned.
“What court order?”
“She said Adrian was going to try to remove the children from your custody.”
His pulse jumped.
“On what grounds?”
“I don’t know.”
Grant later searched.
Nothing filed locally.
Then a sealed emergency petition surfaced in another county.
Petitioner:
A guardian advocate representing Bright Harbor.
Claims:
Malcolm was emotionally unstable.
Neglectful.
Frequently absent.
Children at risk.
Attached evidence included photographs.
Malcolm traveling.
Jasper alone near the pool.
Asher crying with Winifred.
The petition was prepared before the camera incident.
Malcolm stared.
“They were going to use Winifred’s behavior against me.”
Grant nodded.
“They may have been documenting her deterioration.”
“And today’s slap?”
“Could have strengthened the case.”
Malcolm felt sick.
Had Adrian been pressuring Winifred intentionally?
Anonymous calls?
Threats?
Sleep deprivation?
Then Grant found something worse.
The emergency petition requested temporary placement with a familiar family figure.
