Chapter 14 - THE CAMERA AT THE GARDEN GATECarrington mansion had thirty-two exterior cameras.

Lucille hated them after break-in years earlier but kept.

Camera 17 covered garden gate.

Timestamp 8:18 p.m.

Theo appears beside Ellis.

Dry.

Confused.

No tantrum.

Ellis opens gate to enclosed formal garden outside main ballroom access? He escorts to pavilion.

Lucille appears 8:20, points.

Theo says something.

No audio.

Lucille turns.

At 8:37 rain begins.

Theo under pavilion at first.

At 8:46 wind pushes rain sideways.

He leaves pavilion toward gate, probably seeking house.

Gate locked.

He rattles.

At 8:51 Cassandra appears inside glass corridor.

She sees.

Stops.

Theo raises hand.

Cassandra looks toward ballroom.

Then walks away.

Nolan paused video.

“Again.”

Mira played.

Cassandra saw.

No ambiguity.

At 9:03 Lucille exits beneath awning with Ellis.

Theo visible ten yards away.

She points to gate.

Speaks.

Ellis shakes head maybe.

She reenters.

At 9:18 Sadie appears, passes bread.

At 9:24 security guard speaks to Sadie and she leaves.

At 9:36 Theo crouches by wall.

At 10:09 headlights side drive.

Nolan vehicle.

At 10:12 Nolan enters frame.

He sees Theo.

Even without audio, change visible.

Nolan watched himself run.

He turned off.

“Enough.”

Mira:

“We should preserve.”

“Do.”

Body language.

Cassandra’s attorney:

seeing boy does not mean knew condition.

Video shows soaked.

Lucille:

assumed security handling.

But orders/words.

Neglect.

Nolan asked not release to media.

Someone later leaks short clip perhaps. We can keep private until court, maybe tabloids seek but protective due minor.

Court sealed child footage.

Good.

Nolan protected.

Lucille watched with attorney.

After, she requested see Nolan.

She entered office.

“I saw video.”

He waited.

“I thought he was under pavilion.”

“At first.”

“I didn’t realize wind.”

“You saw him after.”

She cried.

“I saw him, but I thought Ellis was bringing in.”

“Then why did you point?”

She looked.

“I told Ellis keep him there ten more minutes.”

Nolan closed eyes.

Admission.

“Why?”

“Because you were almost home.”

“And?”

“We needed signature before Cassandra spoke to auditors.”

“So you chose ten minutes.”

“Yes.”

It became more than hour due Nolan delay? Actually he arrived around time. She thought ten but from 9:03 to 10:12 ~69. Maybe she expected Nolan 9:15 but meeting delayed unknown? Did not bring child in when delay extended because gala chaos. Worse.

Lucille:

“When you were late, I… lost track.”

“You forgot Theo.”

“Yes.”

Her voice broke.

Nolan:

“He didn’t forget you.”

That hurt.

She sat.

“I’m sorry.”

Nolan:

“Sorry is start.”

Not finish.

Lucille asked whether Nolan would let Theo see her.

“His therapist decides with him.”

“You decide.”

“No.”

“Since when does seven-year-old decide family?”

“Since family locked him outside.”

Harsh but.

Then camera uncovered another piece:

Cassandra carrying cream envelope to stage at 9:56.

She checks phone.

Text later recovered:

Nolan 20 min. Keep boy out.

To Lucille.

Lucille replied:

Handled.

There.

Direct.

Nolan saw.

No more “lost track” before 9:56. She knew still out.

At 10:01 Lucille returns ballroom.

At 10:12 Nolan.

So she kept deliberately until near signature.

Conspiracy exposed.

Video was not dramatic beating.

May you like

Just adults repeatedly choosing not to open gate.

Sometimes that is stronger.
