Chapter 17 - CASSANDRA HAD BEEN PAYING HERSELFCassandra’s indictment revealed more.

She created consulting entities through former associate Miles? Already Miles Ashcroft. Use Serena? no. Let's pick Adrian Holt.

Adrian Holt, former colleague, registered Harbor Meridian.

He kept 10%.

Returned 90% via investment vehicle Cassandra beneficial.

Invoices vague:

strategic advisory,

market research,

due diligence.

Some reports copied from public sources.

Millions.

Cassandra argued compensation for proprietary work.

But undisclosed conflict.

She approved own vendor.

Fraud.

Lucille had signed approval renewals without checking.

One text from Cassandra to Adrian:

L will sign anything if I tell her it protects family.

Lucille read in discovery.

She cried.

Cassandra had used her too.

Nolan did not comfort immediately.

“She was right.”

Lucille looked.

“What?”

“You did sign if phrase family.”

Harsh truth.

Lucille:

“I trusted.”

“So did I.”

Difference: Nolan accepted.

Then Cassandra’s personal accounts:

luxury Manhattan apartment deposit.

art.

investment.

No need melodramatic.

She was wealthy already but wanted more.

Her motive mixture:

greed,

control,

fear of losing status.

Continuity agreement also preserved her committee seat until age 65 unless removed for cause by supermajority including Lucille.

Job security.

Nolan laughed cold.

“She wrote herself into Theo’s money for twenty years.”

Elias:

“Essentially.”

Could Nolan have removed? Agreement made harder.

Cassandra engineered permanence.

Then she offered plea if Lucille implicated.

She claimed Lucille explicitly ordered:

“Use Theo trust.”

Lucille admitted.

But claimed no knowledge fraud.

Prosecutors distinguish.

Cassandra's cooperation perhaps reduces later sentence but still significant.

Lucille faced charge for attempted conspiracy to misuse trust? Could be hard legally because no signature, no funds moved. But she could be charged with child neglect/abuse and obstruction/false records if she signed valuation statements knowingly. We can make her resolve misdemeanor/reduced felony later. Keep plausible.

Cassandra said Lucille authorized stale valuations:

“Don’t show Nolan until after gala.”

Email supports.

So false reporting.

That can be fiduciary/civil, perhaps criminal if intentional.

Lucille’s lawyer advises cooperation.

Family name now no shield.

Nolan had line:

“Do not ask me to call anyone.”

Lucille:

“I wasn’t.”

But she had.

She asked old senator friend to “understand context.”

Nolan learned.

“Stop.”

“I’m defending.”

“You are creating more.”

Lucille finally stopped influence.

Cassandra paid herself while telling Lucille family in danger.

She manufactured crisis partly by draining fees.

A manipulator exploiting control freak.

Still Lucille chose.

Nolan’s guilt about delegating:

Cassandra reported quarterly to him too. How missed?

His board packets aggregate.

He focused on Holdings.

Family Office small relative.

He trusted Lucille chair.

Mira:

“You saw numbers but not underlying vendor.”

“Yes.”

“Could reasonable chair catch?”

“Maybe not without red flag.”

Nolan:

“There were red flags.”

“Yes.”

He accepted governance failure, not crime.

He resigned temporarily as protector of broader family office while audit? Outline chap23 says temporarily from some powers. Could do later.

He announced independent co-protector for Theo trust.

No unilateral.

He learned.

Cassandra’s self-pay exposé satisfied readers but not caricature because schemes document.

Theo never lost money.

Nolan built wall.

Then one day Theo asked:

“Is red lady rich?”

“Yes.”

“Then why steal?”

Nolan smiled sadly.

“Having enough doesn’t always stop people wanting more.”

Theo:

“That’s dumb.”

May you like

“Yes.”

Sometimes child answer enough.
