I controlled the company that owned the hotel.

The building did not become a personal toy.

It had creditors.

Employees.

Contracts.

Guests.

I could not walk into rooms without respecting privacy or dismiss workers for amusement.

Genevieve had treated control as ownership.

I would not repeat her mistake.

The board convened that evening.

I attended with bandaged palms.

Genevieve objected.

“She has no operating experience.”

“Correct,” I said.

The room quieted.

“I am not asking to become president tonight.”

Nathaniel looked surprised.

“I am requesting preservation of records, suspension of extraordinary transfers, and an independent audit.”

Those were powers the trust clearly gave me.

The board approved them.

Genevieve’s smile disappeared.
