Chapter 13 - THE WIFE WHO LEFT WITH NOTHING TO EXPLAINMelissa Grant first saw Elena Byrne at a restaurant.

Not meeting.

Reflection.

She had been dining with attorney when Thomas entered with woman.

Melissa recognized husband instantly.

Then woman turned slightly.

Something in her profile bothered Melissa.

Not face.

Eyes.

She watched too long.

Attorney asked:

“Melissa?”

“Nothing.”

Thomas saw her.

Tense.

He approached.

“This is Elena.”

Claire stood.

Melissa’s breath caught.

Those eyes.

Courtroom.

Witness stand.

No.

Impossible.

Claire smiled politely.

“Dr. Grant.”

Melissa froze.

Thomas looked.

“You know each other?”

Claire answered:

“Only by reputation.”

Melissa stared.

“You look familiar.”

Claire’s heart raced.

“People say that.”

Melissa did not smile.

Dinner ended awkwardly.

That night Melissa searched Elena Byrne.

Corporate consultant.

Limited public photos.

Legal name change history not easily public in ordinary search.

But something.

She pulled old courtroom footage.

Claire Bennett.

Eyes.

Same.

Different face.

Different hair.

Years.

Melissa zoomed.

Her hands began shaking.

She called Richard Hale.

No answer.

Called again.

By then Hale was still married to Claire and unaware of truth.

Finally he picked up.

“What?”

Melissa whispered:

“Have you met Thomas’s consultant?”

“Who?”

“Elena Byrne.”

Silence.

Hale said casually:

“My wife is Elena Byrne.”

Melissa stopped breathing.

“What?”

“You’re confused.”

Melissa stood.

“Richard.”

“What?”

“Look at Claire Bennett.”

“Then look at your wife.”

Hale laughed.

“Melissa, stop.”

“I’m serious.”

“You sound insane.”

That word struck.

Confused.

Insane.

The same tools once used against Claire now turned on Melissa.

Melissa screamed:

“LOOK AT HER EYES!”

Hale hung up.

He did look.

Not immediately.

He opened old case photographs late that night while Claire slept upstairs.

He stared at Claire Bennett on witness stand.

Then at wedding photo.

His chest tightened.

Same age range.

Bennett? He knew Elena's maternal family history as Byrne. He hadn't dug.

He dismissed.

Could not be.

People see what they need.

Then Caroline arrived weeks later and forced recognition.

By then Melissa already knew.

She called Thomas.

“That woman is Claire Bennett.”

Thomas went silent.

“What?”

“Elena.”

“She’s Claire.”

Thomas laughed once.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“You’re doing this because we’re separating.”

“No.”

“I saw her.”

“You saw a woman you hate because I’m seeing her.”

Melissa shouted:

“I HEARD HER TESTIFY FOR WEEKS!”

Thomas stopped.

“She changed her face.”

He thought Melissa was spiraling.

“I’m calling your attorney.”

“Thomas—”

“You need help.”

Melissa hung up.

The irony was almost unbearable.

Years earlier Claire told Melissa:

I was awake.

Melissa called her confused.

Now Melissa told people:

That woman is Claire.

Nobody believed.

Not at first.

When truth became public after Caroline’s confrontation, Thomas called Claire.

“Is it true?”

Claire answered.

“Yes.”

Long silence.

“You’re Claire Bennett.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You got close to me because of Melissa.”

Claire swallowed.

“At first.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“At first?”

“Did any part become real?”

Claire could not answer.

That was answer.

Thomas whispered:

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you paid to help them escape consequences.”

“I paid lawyers.”

“You financed private investigators.”

“Experts.”

“Voss.”

Thomas:

“I was protecting wife.”

Claire:

“You were protecting system that called me liar.”

He shouted:

“I WASN’T IN THAT ROOM!”

Claire closed eyes.

He was right.

He funded aftermath.

Not original act.

She had used him to punish Melissa.

Collateral damage.

Thomas said:

“You’re no better than—”

He stopped.

Couldn’t say Hale.

Claire whispered:

“Finish.”

Thomas hung up.

That night Claire cried harder than after Hale discovery.

Because Richard’s pain did not move her much.

Thomas’s did.

He had faults.

But he was not monster she made him play.

Naomi told:

“This is what revenge does when it becomes identity.”

“It recruits people.”

Claire stared.

“So I stop.”

“You tell me.”

Claire looked at Melissa’s name.

Melissa had lost marriage largely because of her own lies before Claire appeared.

But Claire had accelerated.

Manipulated.

She had become part of destruction.

One down had not felt good.

May you like

Two down felt worse.

And Adrian Cross still remained.
