Chapter 23 - THE FACES SHE WOREThe media loved story of Claire’s faces.

They simplified into masks.

THE PLAINTIFF WHO BECAME HIS WIFE

A FACE CHANGED FOR REVENGE

Documentary producers called.

Claire refused most.

One tabloid printed before-and-after photos side by side.

Claire cried seeing.

Her surgeries had not been solely disguise.

They were tied to pain, privacy, reclaiming body.

Now strangers treated face as weapon.

Naomi asked:

“How many versions of yourself do you think exist?”

Claire answered:

“Too many.”

Courtroom Claire.

Elena Byrne.

Richard’s wife.

Thomas’s lover.

Patient.

Plaintiff.

Avenger.

Witness.

Daughter.

Consultant.

None fake entirely.

That was problem.

Claire had worn roles until she no longer knew which was core.

She visited mother.

Diane opened door.

For first time Claire told everything.

Not headlines.

Truth.

Marriage.

Thomas.

Plan.

Diane listened with tears.

Then slapped table—not Claire.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I thought you’d stop me.”

“I would have tried.”

“I know.”

Diane cried.

“You lost years.”

Claire whispered:

“They lost things too.”

“I know.”

“I wanted them to.”

“I know.”

“Are you disappointed?”

Diane looked at daughter.

“Yes.”

Claire flinched.

Then Diane reached hand.

“And I love you.”

Both.

Again.

Claire cried.

Diane said:

“You don’t need me to call everything you did brave.”

“Some of it was terrible.”

Claire laughed through tears.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“You sound like therapist.”

“I’m cheaper.”

They reconciled slowly.

Claire moved closer.

She stopped using Elena socially.

Kept legal name Byrne? She could legally change again eventually. She decided professional name:

Claire Bennett Byrne.

No hiding.

The face remained.

She did not reverse surgery.

It was hers.

When people asked:

“Do you wish you looked like before?”

Claire said:

“I look like me now.”

That was enough.

Meanwhile Hale, Melissa and Adrian finally understood full scope.

At a legal proceeding all three were present for related testimony.

First time since original case.

Hale saw Claire.

Melissa too.

Adrian.

No disguises.

Hale whispered:

“How many people were you?”

Claire heard.

She answered quietly:

“One.”

That truth unsettled him more.

There had never been multiple women.

Only one woman adapting around power.

Adrian looked ashamed.

Melissa looked tired.

They were no longer villains in Claire’s mind as single shape.

Hale remained most culpable for original boundary violations.

Melissa for concealment.

Adrian for concealment and later exploitation.

Voss for system.

Different.

Specific.

Clarity replaced revenge’s blur.

Sarah asked afterward:

“Done?”

Claire looked courthouse.

“Almost.”

One final hearing remained.

Evidence presentation.

Audio.

Again.

The same waveform.

But this time recording would not stop at operating room.

Investigators had compiled years of calls, emails and testimony.

The world was going to hear what happened after Claire heard everything.
