Chapter 14 - ONE DOWNPublic believed Claire’s first target was Richard.

In Claire’s mind Hale and Melissa fell together.
Hale lost marriage and financial secrecy.
Melissa lost marriage and image.
Thomas ended relationship with Claire immediately.
He completed divorce independently.
Melissa blamed Claire for everything.
She went on television.
Against lawyers’ advice.
“She infiltrated our lives.”
“She changed appearance.”
“She targeted us.”
For once, Melissa told truth.
But because she had lied years earlier, public treated every statement suspiciously.
Claire watched clip.
Melissa looked desperate.
“I told them it was her.”
“No one believed me.”
Claire felt no satisfaction.
Only a sick recognition.
That sentence could have been hers.
No one believed me.
Claire turned television off.
She called Melissa.
First time directly in years.
Melissa answered after three rings.
“What do you want?”
Claire:
“To say you were right.”
Melissa laughed bitterly.
“About what?”
“They should have believed you when you recognized me.”
Silence.
Melissa said:
“You think that makes you good?”
“No.”
“Do you know what you did?”
“Yes.”
“You destroyed my marriage.”
“No.”
Claire stopped.
“That’s not fully true.”
“I helped destroy what was already broken.”
Melissa’s breathing shook.
“You slept with my husband.”
No explicit confirmation beyond relationship. Claire said:
“I entered a relationship with him after you separated.”
“You knew exactly what you were doing.”
“Yes.”
Melissa cried.
“You’re sick.”
Claire accepted.
“Maybe.”
Then Melissa said:
“I didn’t touch you.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“In operating room.”
“I never touched you improperly.”
“I laughed.”
“I didn’t report.”
“I lied.”
“But I didn’t do what Richard did.”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“You watched.”
Melissa cried harder.
“I was afraid of him.”
Claire closed eyes.
There it was.
A distinction Claire had refused.
Participation versus failure.
Cowardice versus predation.
Both harmful.
Not same.
Melissa whispered:
“You ruined me as if I was him.”
Claire had no answer.
After call she went to Naomi.
“I think I punished wrong amount.”
Naomi:
“Justice is not arithmetic.”
“I wanted equal pain.”
“That was impossible.”
Claire looked down.
“What do I do?”
“Stop?”
Claire nodded slowly.
Maybe.
Then Sarah called.
“Investigators found something.”
“What?”
“Voss.”
“Financial records.”
“Adrian Cross made payments after release tied to patient confidentiality settlements.”
Claire’s anger returned instantly.
“Settlements?”
“Possibly other complaints.”
“Against Adrian?”
“Yes.”
Claire stood.
“What kind?”
“Not sure.”
Sarah warned:
“Do not approach him.”
Claire said nothing.
Sarah:
“Claire.”
“I heard.”
But the third doctor might not simply be weak witness.
May you like
He might have his own buried history.
And Claire’s promise to stop lasted less than a day.
