Chapter 15 - “THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT”Months later, Emily could still hear the exact hospital phrase:

There was an accident.
It became dividing line.
Before.
After.
But she resisted letting accident become sacred tragedy that excused everything.
Daniel did too.
On anniversary—nine years since wedding—they did not pretend.
Daniel invited her dinner.
Emily agreed.
He arrived early.
Restaurant simple.
No expensive apology.
They talked.
Daniel asked:
“What do you miss about us before kids?”
Emily thought.
“Driving nowhere.”
“What?”
“We used to get coffee and drive.”
“No destination.”
Daniel smiled.
“I forgot.”
“I didn’t.”
After dinner they drove.
No plan.
Maryland back roads.
Emily felt nervous when Daniel approached curve.
He noticed.
Slowed.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Want me stop?”
“No.”
Then:
“Actually yes.”
He pulled over safely.
Emily breathed.
“I hate that road scares me now.”
Daniel:
“I hate cars sometimes.”
She looked surprised.
“You never said.”
“I didn’t want you worry.”
Emily laughed without humor.
“Look where withholding gets us.”
“Fair.”
He confessed nightmares.
Waking trapped.
Phone out of reach.
Hearing her voicemail.
Emily took hand.
“Why not tell?”
“Old habit.”
“Fix it.”
“Yes.”
They sat.
He said:
“I’m scared another accident happens and kids think I broke promise again.”
Emily:
“You cannot promise no accidents.”
“I know.”
“You can promise honesty.”
“Contacts updated.”
“Location works.”
“Emergency plan.”
Daniel nodded.
“And if you die, I’ll be furious.”
He laughed.
“Fair.”
She smiled.
Then kissed him.
First kiss since before birthday.
Not dramatic.
Soft.
Daniel did not deepen or grab.
He let her decide duration.
Emily pulled back.
“Don’t make face.”
“What face?”
“That hopeful face.”
“I have one face.”
“Liar.”
They laughed.
Maybe marriage wasn’t dead.
Maybe it had been in crash too.
Damaged.
May you like
Repairable?
Time.
