Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH HURTS MORE THAN THE LIESix months after accident, Emily made decision.

She asked Daniel to meet at family home.

Dining room.

Same table.

New cake? Not yet.

He arrived.

She looked nervous.

Daniel’s stomach sank.

Maybe no.

He had prepared himself.

Emily said:

“I want to come home.”

Daniel closed eyes.

Not relief theatrically.

He breathed.

“Okay.”

“But.”

He opened.

“Of course.”

“I don’t want old marriage.”

“Neither.”

“I want separate financial independence.”

“Yes.”

“One night a week each person gets own time.”

“Yes.”

“No work devices at family dinner unless actual emergency.”

“Yes.”

“Therapy monthly even when things good.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You’re agreeing too fast.”

He laughed.

“Sorry.”

“What do you want?”

Important.

Daniel thought.

“I want you to tell me when resentment starts.”

“Not after months.”

“Yes.”

“I want you not to protect me from kids disappointment.”

“If I fail, let me face it.”

Emily nodded.

“I want room to have career without every busy week becoming proof I’m repeating past.”

“That’s fair.”

“And…”

He hesitated.

“I want us to have fun again.”

Emily smiled.

“Driving nowhere?”

“Yes.”

They shook hands jokingly.

Then hugged.

No children present.

Decision belonged to adults.

They told Noah and Lily that evening.

Lily screamed.

Noah asked:

“Is chair fixed?”

Emily laughed.

“What?”

“Broken chair.”

Daniel remembered.

“Yes.”

“Mostly.”

Noah:

“Can still break?”

Daniel:

“Any chair can.”

Noah thought.

“Then don’t jump on it.”

Wisdom.

Emily moved back gradually.

Not one dramatic suitcase reversal.

Boxes.

Clothes.

Routine.

The suitcases that had once stood by door eventually went into attic.

Emily paused before storing.

Daniel asked:

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

She touched handle.

“I hated these.”

“I’m glad you packed them.”

She looked.

“What?”

“If you hadn’t left, maybe nothing changed.”

Emily considered.

Sometimes departure is not end.

May you like

Sometimes boundary makes return possible.

She stored bags.
