Chapter 16 - THE BIRTHDAY CARD IN HIS JACKETDaniel found another note months after accident.

Hidden inside navy jacket lining, caught between fabric and pocket.

A small folded paper.

Noah had slipped it there morning of birthday.

Daniel opened.

DAD, PLEASE COME BEFORE CANDLES MELT.

Underneath:

I SAVED YOU BIGGEST PIECE.

Daniel sat in closet.

He cried.

Emily found him.

“What happened?”

He handed note.

She read.

Sat beside.

For several minutes nothing.

Then Daniel said:

“I’m going to keep this forever.”

Emily:

“Maybe not in jacket lining.”

“Good point.”

He framed two notes.

Not in public room.

In home office.

I WAITED FOR YOU.

PLEASE COME BEFORE CANDLES MELT.

Beside them, new photo:

Daniel at Noah’s baseball game.

Lily asleep on shoulder.

Emily beside.

Not punishment wall.

Compass.

Work office changed too.

Daniel removed plaques.

Kept family photo near monitor.

When client asked:

“Big family guy now?”

Daniel said:

“Trying to be.”

No defensive joke.

No shame.

Months after, Cynthia offered small leadership role that did not require travel.

Daniel considered.

This was test.

He discussed with Emily before accepting.

Not permission.

Partnership.

“It adds two evenings per month.”

“Can schedule?”

“Yes.”

“Pay?”

“More, but not crazy.”

“You want it?”

“Yes.”

Emily smiled.

“Then take.”

Daniel hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

“Don’t turn me into reason you never grow.”

That mattered too.

Balance did not mean Daniel shrinking career to prove love.

It meant choices visible.

Shared.

He accepted.

Two evenings.

Calendar marked.

No surprises.

Family adjusted.

Healthy compromise.

Emily saw he could work hard without disappearing.

Daniel saw family could tolerate ambition when not treated as afterthought.

That realization repaired more than apology ever could.
