Chapter 10 - THE FORGED POWER OF ATTORNEYThe document examiner’s final report was direct.

Mason’s signature was forged.

Not merely questionable.

Several characteristics indicated simulation from another document.

The notary seal was genuine.

That complicated.

Carla Jennings, mobile notary, was interviewed.

She remembered Nicole.

Not Mason.

Nicole had arrived with paperwork already signed and photocopy of Mason’s military ID.

Carla should not have notarized without signer present.

She did.

Why?

Nicole claimed Mason appeared by video earlier? Not valid depending rules. Better fictional notary violation. She said Nicole told Mason was deployed and had already verified through a remote service. Carla cut corner.

She accepted responsibility.

Lost commission pending investigation.

But key:

Brent/Nicole used Mason’s military status to explain absence.

Forgery enabled by patriotism.

People wanted help soldier.

Fewer questions.

Mason hated.

Carla said:

“I’m sorry.”

Mason didn’t meet her.

No need.

Rebecca:

“This is strong.”

“What happens?”

“Forgery investigation.”

“Power likely invalid.”

“It never gave what Brent claimed anyway.”

Lily breathed.

Then bank confirmed Brent attempted use.

That turned fake paper from prop into instrument.

He used to redirect mail.

Authorize vendors.

Attempt home equity.

Possibly access some household services.

Financial crimes now.

Brent hired criminal defense attorney.

Nicole hired separate attorney.

Mason noticed.

“Separate?”

Rebecca:

“Interesting.”

Married defendants often separate when interests diverge.

A crack widening.

Then Brent filed response.

His version:

Mason verbally authorized broad powers.

Signature had been added later only to “formalize existing wishes.”

Nicole thought legitimate.

Lily was mentally unstable.

Kennel was temporary safety measure after Lily “became violent.”

Cane was for dog.

Marks from Lily “falling and struggling.”

Emma marks? Brent claimed from outdoor play.

Mason read.

Rage.

Rebecca:

“Put it down.”

“He’s calling my daughter liar.”

“He’s defending.”

“He has rights.”

“I know.”

“Don’t let rights feel like truth.”

Good.

Lily read and almost broke.

“He says I attacked Nicole.”

“Did you?”

“I shoved her away from Emma once.”

“Then say that.”

“He’ll make me monster.”

“No.”

“Truth can include you pushing someone.”

Lily stared.

Mason continued:

“You do not need to be perfect for them to be wrong.”

That helped.

The power-of-attorney investigation revealed one legitimate email Mason sent Brent:

If something happens to me, make sure Lily gets whatever she needs. Don’t let paperwork bury her.

Brent’s defense might twist:

Mason wanted him involved.

Mason laughed bitterly.

“I told him protect her.”

Instead he tried replace.

That betrayal cut deepest.

Then Rebecca found audio voicemail Mason sent Brent before deployment:

“Take care of my girls.”

Mason listened.

His own voice.

Casual.

Trusting.

He nearly cried.

Lily heard.

Brent had used phrase as permission.

Maybe he convinced himself.

Entitlement can turn duty into ownership.

Mason asked:

“Did he ever say Dad trusted him more?”

Lily nodded.

“Constantly.”

Their father Frank left small business assets mostly equal, but Mason inherited family cabin? Maybe Brent resented. Let's not overcomplicate.

Brent had always believed Mason got more respect.

Military medals.

Stable marriage.

House.

Daughter.

He saw “taking care” as chance to finally be central.

Then money made central profitable.

Nicole liked lifestyle.

Together they normalized.

Forgery crossed clear line.

Once fake document worked once, they used more.

Rebecca said:

“The most important legal thing is pattern.”

Mason looked.

“The most important family thing is Lily never has to ask if I believe her again.”

Lily heard from doorway.

She cried.

He went.

No speech.

Held.

The forged power of attorney was void.

But the emotional authority Brent forged lasted longer.

Every day Mason had to undo sentences sent in his name.

Stop calling.

Listen to Brent.

Maybe Emma should stay with them.

Mason replaced not with perfect words, but presence.

Breakfast.

School pickup.

Therapy waiting room.

Laundry.

Ordinary.

Brent had forged Mason’s signature.

Mason rebuilt his own meaning by showing up enough that no fake message could define him again.
