Chapter 22 - NICOLE BREAKS FIRSTNicole’s statement lasted six hours over two sessions.

She cried.
Stopped.
Returned.
No one called brave.
She was cooperating after participating.
She admitted:
Brent suggested moving in.
She liked house.
She liked being needed by Emma.
She resented Lily.
Why?
Lily was younger.
Had what Nicole wanted:
stable marriage.
child.
beautiful home.
Mason’s loyalty.
Nicole had miscarriages? Sensitive. Could mention fertility struggles without details, but unnecessary. Let's say she and Brent had wanted children and it never happened. That fueled attachment but not identity blame.
Nicole:
“I told myself Emma needed me.”
She began seeing Lily as obstacle.
Brent fed:
“Lily is unstable.”
“Mason made mistake.”
“Emma deserves better.”
Nicole believed because wanted.
Then money.
Brent’s business failing.
He said Mason “owed him” for years of helping family.
Nicole agreed.
Property company invoices.
Gift cards.
Ring.
She rationalized.
Then forgery.
She knew wrong when she brought paper to notary.
“Why?”
Prosecutor asked.
“Brent said Mason would sign if here.”
“Did you believe?”
“Not really.”
There.
She crossed knowingly.
Fake messages.
“At first I sent one saying Brent was helping because Lily wouldn’t listen.”
“Then Brent took over.”
“Did you know?”
“Yes.”
“Why continue?”
“Because Lily stopped trusting herself.”
That answer chilled.
Nicole understood effect.
Then kennel.
She admitted:
“I wanted scare Lily.”
“Did you intend hurt Emma?”
“No.”
“Why lock Emma too?”
“She refused leave Lily.”
“So?”
“I was angry.”
There.
No excuse.
Nicole said Brent held cane, struck bars, had previously used on Lily.
She had told him not around Emma, not because wrong but because she feared evidence.
Prosecutor:
“Did you ever see Brent strike Emma?”
“No.”
“Did you grab child?”
“Yes.”
“Hard enough leave bruise?”
“I didn’t mean.”
“Yes.”
Lily read summary later and cried.
Nicole admitted everything that mattered.
Then motive:
Brent said once:
“I’m tired of living in Mason’s shadow.”
Nicole encouraged.
“You’d run house better.”
She reinforced jealousy.
They imagined:
if Lily discredited, they manage.
If Mason returns, perhaps convince him Lily unfit.
If Mason never returns, they seek long-term control.
No clear murder.
Important.
They built on chance, not cause.
Nicole also revealed Brent planned another staged incident the morning after kennel.
He intended bring a family counselor acquaintance? Maybe not colluding. He planned call crisis service and report Lily violent after releasing her, using her anger as proof.
But Mason arrived early.
Timing destroyed.
That made chap 1 even stronger.
The kennel was not end.
It was setup.
Mason stared.
“If I came Saturday…”
Rebecca:
“Maybe he’d have more footage, reports.”
Lily:
“Stop.”
No what-ifs.
Good.
Nicole accepted plea later:
charges related to unlawful confinement/child endangerment, fraud/forgery participation, theft. Reduced due cooperation, but meaningful penalties, restitution, no contact unless future authorized.
She lost public image.
Boutique closed? Could be due finances/legal. Fine.
But most important:
She never got Emma.
Emma asked:
“Is Aunt Nicole sorry?”
Mason:
“She says she is.”
“Do I have to see her?”
“No.”
“Can I later?”
“If safe and you want, with adults helping.”
Emma nodded.
Choice.
Nicole broke first because Brent planned blame her.
She saw defense drafts:
Nicole unstable.
Nicole obsessed with Emma.
Nicole forged papers.
Brent just trusted wife.
Same script.
Unstable.
He would sacrifice.
So she talked.
Self-preservation sparked truth.
Still truth useful.
Mason felt no gratitude.
Maybe slight.
Complex.
Lily said:
“I hope she gets better.”
Mason looked surprised.
“I don’t forgive.”
“Those aren’t same.”
Exactly.
Nicole’s cooperation finally gave prosecutors enough internal evidence to make Brent’s denial impossible.
Now only one question remained:
Would Brent admit what he had actually wanted?
Not just money.
Not just house.
Mason’s life.
May you like
His place.
His identity.
