Chapter 18 - BRENT STRIKES BACK FIRSTBrent’s filing described Mason as:

“Recently returned combat servicemember exhibiting explosive aggression.”

Lily threw paper.

“He says you’re unstable now.”

Mason almost laughed.

“He likes same script.”

Exactly.

First Lily.

Now Mason.

Anyone threatening Brent becomes unstable.

Evidence:

edited backyard video.

Mason yelling.

military service.

old college bar fight at twenty.

one incident where Mason punched wall at nineteen.

Mason disclosed.

No hiding.

Family evaluator Dr. Karen Willis met him.

“Any history of violence toward wife?”

“No.”

Lily separately:

“No.”

“Child?”

“No.”

“Substance?”

“No.

“Nightmares?”

“Sometimes after deployments, normal stress.”

“Treatment?”

“Yes voluntary counseling.”

Mason did not perform invulnerability.

That helped.

Brent’s lawyer suggested PTSD.

Karen corrected:

“You cannot diagnose from video.”

Important.

Public, however, less careful.

Clip spread.

Mason in uniform.

“YOU BASTARD!”

Comments.

Some sympathetic.

Some cruel.

Lily recognized pain.

“They did this to me.”

“Yes.”

“How do you feel?”

“Like punching phone.”

She smiled.

“Don’t.”

He didn’t.

Brent then claimed Lily’s current statements coached by Mason.

Nicole cooperation undermined.

She admitted abuse existed before Mason return.

Camera.

Helen.

Doctor.

Emma.

Brent’s strike still caused temporary review.

Mason had to allow supervised transition? Not necessarily. Emma remained with parents; Brent had no parental rights. Custody not seriously removed, but complaint triggered home visit.

Social worker came.

House.

Emma.

Scout.

Kennel gone.

Emma spoke privately.

She said:

“Dad yells when scared sometimes.”

Honest.

“Does he hit?”

“No.”

“Are you scared?”

“Not of Dad.”

Then:

“Uncle Brent said Dad’s Army brain would be broken.”

Mason heard later and winced.

Brent had planted stigma with child too.

Social worker closed immediate safety concern regarding Mason.

Brent’s claim weakened.

Then Nicole gave statement about backyard.

She had key.

Brent ordered lock.

Lily begged.

Emma crying.

No safety emergency.

They could have walked away.

They chose kennel as punishment/intimidation.

Nicole admitted:

“I was angry at Lily.”

“I thought she was trying take Emma away from me.”

“I wanted her scared.”

That sentence hurt.

At least honest.

She did not directly strike Emma but grabbed arm during conflict.

Emma’s bruises partly from that.

Nicole cried.

“I didn’t mean leave mark.”

Intent doesn’t erase.

Lily listened summary.

“No sympathy.”

Mason:

“You don’t have to.”

Nicole’s cooperation was not forgiveness.

It was evidence.

Brent retaliated against Nicole publicly? Through lawyer claimed she unstable/manipulated by Lily.

Same again.

Mason laughed bitterly:

“He has one adjective.”

Unstable.

When all enemies unstable, maybe common denominator is Brent.

Then prosecutors added witness tampering concerns after Brent contacted Helen indirectly through mutual friend:

“You may not remember accurately.”

Not overt threat.

Still counsel warned no contact.

Brent was losing control and reverting to old method:

manage story.

But now story had too many independent voices.

Mason.

Lily.

Emma.

Nicole.

Helen.

Carla.

bank records.

camera.

messages.

documents.

No single target to isolate.

Brent’s strike first had aimed at Mason’s anger.

Instead it exposed pattern.

And Mason finally understood the most powerful response to a man who weaponized reactions:

Do not give him one he can edit.
