Chapter 23 - The Truth Milo ChoosesAt ten, Milo understood the full story.

Not because adults sat him down dramatically.
Because he asked.
He had seen an old legal file marked with his name.
“What happened when I was one?”
Travis and Kelsey looked at each other.
Then told him.
The staircase.
Adrienne.
Lucia absent.
The slap.
Travis entering.
The deleted camera footage.
The second camera.
The inheritance conflict.
Not every financial detail.
Enough.
Milo listened quietly.
Then asked Adrienne himself.
“Did you hate me?”
She could have softened it.
Instead:
“No.”
“Did you resent me?”
“Yes.”
“What’s that?”
She explained.
“I thought things you received meant I had lost something.”
“But I was baby.”
“Yes.”
“That’s dumb.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you stand up?”
Adrienne’s eyes filled.
“Because I was selfish in that moment.”
Milo thought.
“Are you selfish now?”
“Sometimes.”
He laughed.
“Me too.”
She smiled through tears.
Then he said:
“I forgive you.”
Everyone froze.
Adrienne shook her head.
“You don’t have to.”
“I know.”
That was why it mattered.
Milo had not been trained to forgive.
No adult asked.
No family demanded.
It was his.
He continued:
“But if I have baby someday, you have to stand up.”
Adrienne laughed and cried at the same time.
“Immediately.”
“Before Lucia.”
Lucia, now semi-retired and visiting for dinner, shouted from the kitchen:
“Especially before Lucia!”
Everyone laughed.
A family joke grew from an old wound.

Not mocking it.
Transforming it.
