Chapter 6 - The Lake House IncidentThe child had been six.

Her name was Sophie.
Travis remembered the summer.
Barely.
He had been working overseas.
Adrienne was staying at Walter’s lake property with cousins.
Sophie wandered toward the pool while adults were inside.
Adrienne was outside.
She saw her.
She did not immediately intervene because, according to witness statements, she assumed Sophie’s mother was nearby.
The girl fell into the shallow end.
A gardener pulled her out within seconds.
No lasting injury.
The settlement was not for physical harm.
It was over accusations, legal fees, and family conflict after Adrienne claimed Sophie’s mother had lied about where she was.
Walter paid to end the dispute.
Travis stared at his sister.
“You never told me.”
“You were in Singapore.”
“For four years?”
Adrienne looked away.
Kelsey felt sick.
“Did Dad tell you to get counseling?”
Silence.
Charles answered:
“Yes.”
“Did she?”
“For a few sessions.”
Adrienne snapped:
“I was not responsible for that child.”
Kelsey stared.
There.
The same sentence hidden beneath everything.
Not my responsibility.
Lucia.
Sophie.
Milo.
Someone else should get up.
Someone else should pick him up.
Someone else should protect the child.
Travis whispered:
“Why?”
Adrienne frowned.
“Why what?”
“Why do you keep doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“When a child needs help, why do you decide it belongs to someone else?”
Her face twisted.
“I don’t.”
“You did twice.”
“Two accidents over decades?”
“You deleted footage this time.”
Adrienne stopped.
That was the difference.
The cover-up.
Travis said:
“You knew it was wrong.”
Adrienne whispered:
“I knew Kelsey would use it against me.”
Kelsey almost laughed.
“You keep saying that as though I’m the threat.”
Adrienne looked at her.
“You are.”
“Why?”
“Because Travis chooses you.”
The room fell quiet.
Kelsey stared.
“That is marriage.”
“I know.”
“No. I don’t think you do.”
Adrienne’s eyes filled.
Kelsey continued:
“He is your brother.”
“I raised him.”
Travis flinched.
After their mother died when Travis was fourteen and Adrienne was twenty-one, she had postponed college for a year.
She drove him to school.
Helped him apply to universities.
Protected him from Walter’s temper.
Travis loved her for it.
But somewhere along the way, Adrienne had turned sacrifice into ownership.
Travis stepped closer.
“You did take care of me.”
Adrienne began crying.
“And then you left.”
“I grew up.”
“You left.”
“I got married.”
“To her.”
“Yes.”
“And suddenly I was difficult.”
“You were calling Kelsey three times a day.”
“She didn’t understand our family.”
“You showed up on our honeymoon.”
Adrienne froze.
Kelsey stared.
“You told me that was an accident.”
Travis closed his eyes.
“It wasn’t.”
Another lie.
Small compared with Milo.
But part of the same structure.
Adrienne whispered:
“I thought you needed me.”
“I didn’t.”
The words hurt her visibly.
Travis softened but did not retract them.
“I love you.”
Adrienne looked up.
“But I don’t belong to you.”
She started sobbing.
For years, Travis would have comforted her immediately.
This time he remained still.
Not because he stopped loving her.
Because comfort had too often become permission.
That afternoon, he asked Adrienne to leave the mansion.
She stared.
“You’re throwing me out?”
“For now.”
“Because Kelsey wants me gone?”
“No.”
Kelsey looked at him.
Travis continued:
“Because I watched the video.”
Adrienne’s face collapsed.
“You believe her over me.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I believe what I saw.”
That distinction mattered.
Adrienne packed two suitcases.
Before leaving, she knelt near Milo.
Kelsey instinctively moved between them.
Adrienne froze.
The rejection landed.
She looked at the baby.
“I’m sorry.”
Milo reached toward Kelsey instead.
Adrienne stood.
At the door, she looked at Travis.
“You’ll regret this.”
He stared.
“For what?”
She wiped her tears.
“When the board finds out Dad hid Milo’s trust from the company, you’re going to need me.”
Travis frowned.
“What does the board have to do with Milo?”
Adrienne’s expression changed.
May you like
She had said too much.
Then she walked out.
