Chapter 24 - The Staircase TestMilo was twelve when the family visited a historic hotel owned by Bennett Commercial Group.

A grand staircase dominated the lobby.
Kelsey noticed immediately.
So did Adrienne.
Neither said anything.
Milo raced upward.
“Slow!” Travis shouted.
Milo rolled his eyes.
At the top, he leaned over the railing.
“Look!”
Three adults shouted:
“BACK UP!”
Milo laughed.
Adrienne clutched her chest.
“I hate children.”
Kelsey burst out laughing.
“You’ve come full circle.”
Milo ran down.
Safely.
At dinner, he received school results.
Ninety-four in science.
He looked disappointed.
Adrienne said:
“That’s excellent.”
“Ethan got ninety-eight.”
“Who cares?”
Milo stared.
“You used to care who better.”
Adrienne nearly choked.
Travis laughed.
Kelsey said:
“He knows too much.”
Adrienne smiled.
“Yes.”
Then:
“And I was wrong.”
No defensiveness.
Milo nodded.
The story had become family history.
Not family law.
That night, Kelsey stood at the hotel staircase.
Adrienne joined her.
“Thinking?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
Kelsey looked at her.
“If you could change that day…”
“I’d stand up before he reached the first step.”
Kelsey nodded.
“I wouldn’t slap you.”
Adrienne smiled faintly.
“Travis would still walk in at the worst time.”
They both laughed.
“He has a gift.”
They stood quietly.
Then Adrienne said:
“I used to wish that day never happened.”
Kelsey looked at her.
“Now?”
“I wish Milo never fell.”
A distinction.
“But I don’t wish the truth stayed hidden.”
May you like
Kelsey understood.
“Me neither.”
