CHAPTER 7
The Only Man Who Never Left the Ballroom

The conference room fell silent.

Richard Mercer stared at the television screen long after the message disappeared.

You protected the wrong thing.

Detective Helen Brooks slowly closed her laptop.

"They wanted us looking at New York."

Samuel nodded.

"And we forgot to look right here."

Adrian frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Samuel stood up.

He walked toward the ballroom windows.

Down below...

Guests were still being interviewed.

Security officers stood at every exit.

No one had left.

Samuel quietly said,

"The files could be copied."

"The livestream could be planned."

"The comments could be automated."

"But one thing still doesn't make sense."

Helen looked at him.

"What?"

"The powder."

Everyone turned toward the silver packet lying on the table.

Samuel picked it up.

"If the real goal was stealing corporate files..."

"...why involve my brother?"

No one answered.

Richard suddenly looked up.

"Because Adrian was never the target."

Samuel slowly nodded.

"He was the witness."

Silence.

Adrian stared at his brother.

"The witness to what?"

Samuel walked back into the ballroom.

He stopped beside the enormous birthday cake.

The candles had burned down.

Champagne glasses remained untouched.

Everything looked exactly as it had an hour earlier.

Except...

One chair was empty.

Samuel looked around.

"Where's Uncle Victor?"

Richard frowned.

"He left before the FBI arrived."

Helen immediately checked the guest list.

Victor Mercer.

Richard's younger cousin.

A retired board member.

Family.

Trusted for decades.

One of only seven people who knew tomorrow's board vote would take place.

Samuel quietly smiled.

"I've been wondering why he kept insisting we livestream tonight."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"He suggested the livestream?"

Richard nodded slowly.

"It was his idea."

Helen looked up sharply.

"So he wanted the entire family distracted."

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

"He wanted Adrian distracted."

The room fell silent.

Adrian frowned.

"Me?"

Samuel nodded.

"If you had poured that powder into my wine..."

"You would've spent the entire night trying to explain yourself."

"The FBI."

"The guests."

"The livestream."

"You'd never notice Uncle Victor quietly walking away."

Helen immediately radioed the agents at the marina.

"Stop every departing vessel."

Seconds later...

The reply came back.

"Too late."

Victor's private speedboat had already left the harbor...

Exactly twenty-three minutes earlier.

Samuel slowly looked toward the dark ocean beyond the ballroom windows.

For the first time that evening...

He realized something chilling.

Victor had never intended to stay long enough to watch the plan succeed.

He only needed everyone looking at the wrong brother.

Because while Adrian was becoming the perfect suspect...

The real mastermind had quietly disappeared into the night.
