CHAPTER 8

FINAL CHAPTER
The Birthday Was the Perfect Alibi
The Coast Guard intercepted Victor Mercer's speedboat less than forty miles off the Miami coast.
He never resisted.
He never ran.
When detectives boarded the vessel, Victor was sitting alone on the upper deck, calmly drinking a glass of whiskey while watching the sunrise.
Detective Helen Brooks placed the arrest warrant on the table.
Victor glanced at it.
Then smiled.
"So..."
"You finally stopped chasing the wrong people."
Helen sat across from him.
"You used your own family."
Victor shrugged.
"I used their expectations."
Back at the hotel...
Samuel, Adrian, and Richard Mercer gathered inside the ballroom.
The birthday decorations were still untouched.
The orchestra had long since packed away their instruments.
Only silence remained.
Helen entered carrying a sealed evidence box.
Inside were three items.
The silver packet.
The fake anonymous letters.
And a flash drive recovered from Victor's yacht.
Richard looked at it.
"Is everything on there?"
Helen nodded.
"Every financial record."
"Every stolen document."
"And every step of the plan."
Samuel slowly opened the investigation report.
The truth was finally complete.
Victor had never intended to poison anyone.
The white powder was harmless activated charcoal from the beginning.
Its only purpose was to make Adrian appear guilty if anyone caught him.
The livestream...
Was Victor's own suggestion weeks before the party.
He knew Samuel enjoyed speaking directly to shareholders online.
If Adrian appeared to be poisoning his brother in front of more than a hundred thousand viewers...
The story would explode across every news network before sunrise.
Mercer Global's stock would collapse.
The emergency board meeting would be canceled.
Every executive would spend weeks dealing with scandal instead of reviewing financial records.
During that confusion...
Victor planned to quietly erase evidence of nearly eight years of embezzlement.
More than $240 million had disappeared through shell companies disguised as international consulting fees.
The birthday party...
The livestream...
The anonymous messages...
The powder...
Even the hacked ballroom screen...
None of them were the crime.
They were distractions.
A perfectly timed performance designed to make everyone look in one direction...
While the real theft happened somewhere else.
Richard closed the report.
"I kept asking who wanted to hurt my family."
He looked out across the empty ballroom.
"I should have asked..."
"...who wanted to distract my family."
No one spoke.
Adrian finally broke the silence.
"I almost believed I was the problem."
Samuel smiled.
"I never did."
Adrian looked at him.
"You trusted me?"
Samuel laughed quietly.
"When we were twelve..."
"You took the blame after I broke Dad's watch."
"When we were seventeen..."
"You punched a senior because he cheated during my championship match."
"When we were twenty-five..."
"You turned down a promotion because it would've meant leaving me to run the company alone."
Samuel placed a hand on his younger brother's shoulder.
"A man doesn't spend his whole life protecting his brother..."
"...then suddenly try to kill him over a glass of wine."
Adrian lowered his eyes.
For the first time that night...
He smiled.
Richard walked toward the center of the ballroom.
The enormous birthday cake was still there.
Untouched.
He picked up a knife.
Then looked at both of his sons.
"I think..."
"We've delayed this birthday long enough."
Samuel laughed.
"You still want cake?"
Richard smiled.
"Tonight isn't about celebrating another year."
"It's about celebrating something much more valuable."
"What?"
Richard looked at both brothers before answering.
"That no one succeeded in turning my sons against each other."
The three men cut the birthday cake together.
No cameras.
No livestream.
No reporters.
Just a father...
And his two sons.
Outside, the first rays of sunlight reflected across the Atlantic.
Inside the empty ballroom...
The celebration finally began.
Not because a birthday had been saved.
But because a family had refused to become its own worst enemy.
