Chapter 1 - The Three Witnesses Jasper Never SawJasper believed Naomi would choose him before she ever asked a question.

That belief was the reason he never looked at the screen.

Less than a minute earlier, Naomi had stepped out of her private office to answer a call from the security desk downstairs. Her executive assistant, Elise Harper, remained beside the long walnut conference table, organizing documents from an executive meeting that had already run fifteen minutes over schedule.

Three people were still connected on the wall-mounted monitor.

Grant Keller, the company’s chief financial officer.

Melissa Crane, head of operations.

And Daniel Ross, general counsel.

Their cameras were on.

Their microphones were muted.

Nobody had disconnected.

Jasper walked into the room and closed the door.

Elise looked up.

“Mr. Bennett?”

Jasper did not smile.

“Give me the blue folder.”

Elise’s hand stopped over the papers.

“What?”

“The folder you showed Grant.”

“That’s for Naomi.”

“I know.”

He extended his hand.

“Give it to me.”

Elise did not move.

The folder contained invoices she had discovered the previous afternoon while reconciling consulting expenses for the company’s upcoming audit.

At first, nothing had seemed extraordinary.

One payment.

Then four.

Then eleven.

All sent to a company called Armitage Strategic Advisory.

Almost $2.9 million in eighteen months.

The problem was that nobody at Naomi’s company seemed to remember hiring Armitage.

And several of the approval documents carried Naomi’s digital signature.

Elise had spent four years managing Naomi’s calendar, correspondence, and signature workflow.

She knew the documents were wrong.

“I’m waiting for Naomi,” Elise said.

Jasper stepped closer.

“You don’t need to involve her.”

“She’s the CEO.”

“And I’m her husband.”

“That doesn’t give you authority over company records.”

Jasper’s face hardened.

On the monitor behind him, Grant leaned slightly toward his camera.

Daniel stopped writing.

Melissa’s eyes narrowed.

Jasper still did not notice them.

“You’re making this much bigger than it is.”

“Then explain the invoices.”

“I don’t owe you an explanation.”

“Naomi is going to ask.”

“She won’t if you stop creating problems.”

Elise stared at him.

“Are you threatening me?”

“I’m warning you.”

“About what?”

“About confusing access with importance.”

The insult landed exactly as Jasper intended.

Elise had heard versions of it before.

She was an assistant.

She scheduled meetings.

She carried files.

She was close enough to power to see everything but supposedly not important enough to question it.

Jasper leaned toward her.

“You work for Naomi because she trusts you.”

“Yes.”

“Trust can disappear quickly.”

Elise glanced toward the screen.

Grant was no longer pretending to review paperwork.

All three executives were openly watching.

Elise said carefully:

“Are you asking me to delete the Armitage documents?”

“I’m telling you the invoices were coded incorrectly.”

“Who told you that?”

“I know.”

“How?”

Jasper’s jaw tightened.

“Delete the folder.”

“No.”

Something changed in him.

Not panic.

Calculation.

He looked toward the office door.

Naomi’s footsteps were faintly audible from the hallway.

Then Jasper did something Elise did not understand at first.

He grabbed the front of his shirt.

Pulled it crooked.

Twisted the collar.

Ran both hands aggressively through his hair.

Elise stared.

“What are you doing?”

Jasper loosened another button.

Then shouted.

“NAOMI! HELP!”

Elise froze.

The footsteps accelerated.

Jasper stumbled backward as though someone had pushed him.

Naomi rushed through the doorway.

“What happened?”

Jasper pointed directly at Elise.

“She just forced herself on me!”

Naomi stopped.

Her face changed instantly.

Shock.

Then anger.

Her eyes moved toward Elise.

For perhaps two seconds, Elise saw exactly what Jasper had expected.

Naomi believed him.

Elise did not shout.

She did not rush to defend herself.

She simply looked past Jasper and said:

“Naomi… the meeting hasn’t ended.”

Naomi frowned.

“What?”

Elise nodded toward the monitor.

Naomi turned.

Grant.

Melissa.

Daniel.

Still there.

Nobody had left.

Nobody had looked away.

Then Daniel unmuted himself.

“Naomi.”

Jasper went still.

Daniel continued.

“We saw everything.”

For one second, Jasper forgot to perform.

The terrified expression vanished.

His shoulders straightened.

His mouth tightened.

The supposed victim disappeared.

Naomi saw it happen.

Her anger toward Elise broke instantly.

“Jasper…”

He looked at her.

“You forgot the meeting was still live, didn’t you?”

Jasper said nothing.

Grant unmuted.

“He came in after you left.”

Naomi’s eyes moved toward the CFO.

“What did he do?”

“He demanded Elise give him a folder.”

Melissa added:

“He told her to delete it.”

Naomi slowly looked toward Jasper.

“What folder?”

“This is being misunderstood.”

Elise reached for the blue folder.

Jasper stepped forward.

Naomi noticed.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Elise handed the folder to Naomi.

Jasper’s face had gone pale.

Naomi opened it.

Invoices.

Wire confirmations.

Approval forms.

Her own signature.

She looked at the total.

$2,873,400.

“What is Armitage Strategic Advisory?”

Nobody answered.

Naomi looked at Grant.

“You know?”

“I started checking yesterday.”

“And?”

Grant hesitated.

“We couldn’t identify any legitimate work product.”

Jasper finally spoke.

“It’s a consulting vendor.”

“For what?”

“Strategic planning.”

Naomi looked at him.

“Our strategic consultants report to Melissa.”

Melissa’s voice came from the screen.

“I’ve never worked with Armitage.”

Jasper’s breathing changed.

Naomi turned another page.

Her signature appeared again.

She stared.

“I didn’t approve this.”

“You approve hundreds of documents.”

“I know my signature workflow.”

“It could have been automatic.”

“No.”

She looked directly at her husband.

“Why did you want Elise to delete this?”

Jasper said nothing.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Naomi, there’s something else.”

She turned toward the monitor.

“What?”

“We pulled Armitage’s state registration while you were out of the room.”

Jasper closed his eyes.

Naomi noticed.

“Who owns it?”

Daniel looked directly at Jasper.

“Technically, a trust.”

“What trust?”

“The Hawthorne Family Preservation Trust.”

Naomi frowned.

“Hawthorne?”

Her mother’s maiden name.

Her late mother’s family.

Jasper whispered:

“Naomi…”

Daniel continued.

“The trustee is Charles Hawthorne.”

Naomi stopped breathing.

Charles was her mother’s older brother.

Her uncle.

Chairman of Naomi’s company.

The man who had walked her down the aisle when her father died.

The man Naomi had trusted since childhood.

And suddenly Jasper’s desperate lie against Elise no longer looked like the crime.

It looked like the first loose thread.

Naomi closed the folder.

“Everybody stays connected.”

Then she locked the office door.

Because for the first time, she understood something terrifying.

Jasper had not been trying to hide one embarrassing invoice.

May you like

He had been trying to stop Naomi from discovering where the money led.

And it led directly into her family.
