Chapter 6 - Evelyn’s Box Was Missing One FolderThe storage facility sat forty minutes north of Manhattan.

Naomi did not go alone.
Outside counsel.
A forensic technician.
Grant.
Daniel.
Elise.
Jasper was explicitly excluded.
Charles refused permission to access the unit.
That forced lawyers to obtain an emergency preservation order because the boxes belonged to Evelyn’s estate, not Charles personally.
By late afternoon, they entered.
Rows of shelves.
Old company ledgers.
Family photographs.
Personal correspondence.
Evelyn’s handwriting appeared everywhere.
Naomi had to stop once.
A box labeled NAOMI — SCHOOL.
Inside were childhood drawings.
Her mother had kept all of them.
Naomi swallowed the grief and continued.
They found the box from the anonymous photograph.
EVELYN STERLING — PRIVATE.
Inside were board minutes.
Letters.
A small digital recorder.
A handwritten notebook.
But one hanging folder was empty.
Label:
CHARLES / ARMITAGE.
Naomi stared.
“Someone removed it.”
The facility manager checked access logs.
Charles had entered the unit three days earlier.
Jasper’s accusation against Elise happened today.
Naomi’s skin prickled.
Charles may have known the investigation was coming before she did.
“Who told him?”
Everyone looked at Jasper’s absence without saying his name.
Then Elise opened Evelyn’s notebook.
The final months were filled with short entries.
Celia says Charles is moving money again.
Celia Grant.
The internal auditor who had been forced out five years earlier.
Another:
Martin Vale is frightened of Charles but continues protecting him.
Jasper’s father.
Naomi stopped.
“Martin knew Charles before I met Jasper.”
Grant looked up.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Jasper had said their fathers knew each other casually.
Evelyn’s notebook suggested more.
Another entry:
Charles has started speaking with Jasper. I don’t like it.
Naomi’s stomach tightened.
Date:
Seven months before Naomi and Jasper met.
She stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Elise looked at her.
“What?”
“Jasper told me he met Charles after we started dating.”
The room went quiet.
Evelyn continued:
Jasper is intelligent, insecure, and eager to prove he is more than Martin’s son. Charles understands that type of hunger too well.
Naomi sat down.
Her mother had known Jasper before Naomi did.
Or at least known of him.
Another entry:
I hope Naomi never becomes useful to these men.
Naomi’s eyes filled.
Grant looked away to give her privacy.
She turned the page.
A folded letter fell out.
Addressed:
NAOMI.
She stopped breathing.
The letter had never been sealed.
Naomi opened it.
My darling,
If I have time, I will say all of this to you myself.
Her throat tightened.
Evelyn wrote about Charles.
Their childhood.
Their company.
The way family businesses made loyalty feel morally superior to accountability.
Then:
Your uncle loves you. Do not make the mistake of believing love makes him safe.
Naomi closed her eyes.
The sentence could have been written about Jasper too.
Evelyn continued:
Charles believes control is the same thing as protection. When he is frightened, he decides what other people are allowed to know.
Another paragraph:
I found vendor payments linked to Martin Vale. I believe Charles has been using Martin’s companies to hide family-office losses.
Naomi glanced toward Grant.
The same pattern.
Then:
Martin’s son Jasper has begun doing small consulting work for Charles.
Naomi’s heart accelerated.
This was before she met Jasper.
I met Jasper once. He is charming. I think he genuinely wants to build something of his own. I also think Charles knows exactly how to make that ambition useful.
Naomi stopped.
So Jasper had not necessarily approached her as part of a plan.
But Charles had known him.
Paid him.
Studied him.
Then Naomi entered Jasper’s life.
The timing no longer felt innocent.
The letter continued.
If you ever become close to Jasper, keep your own judgment.
Naomi covered her mouth.
Her mother had predicted something without knowing the future.
Not because she was psychic.
Because she understood character.
At the bottom:
Do not sign any continuity proxy Charles brings you.
Naomi cried then.
Not loudly.
Just tears she could not stop.
Her mother had warned her.
The letter existed.
But never reached her.
“Why was this here?”
Elise whispered.
Naomi looked at the storage logs.
Charles controlled the facility after Evelyn died.
He had stored the box.
He must have known the letter was inside.
Maybe he never read it.
Maybe he did.
Then Grant found the digital recorder.
One audio file.
Evelyn and Charles.
Evelyn’s voice weak but clear.
“I’m removing you as trustee.”
Charles:
“You’re sick.”
“So?”
“You’re not thinking clearly.”
Naomi froze.
The language.
Same as the stability file.
Evelyn:
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Turn disagreement into illness.”
Silence.
Then Evelyn:
“You did it to Celia. You’ll do it to Naomi if she lets you.”
Naomi stared at the recorder.
Charles answered:
“Naomi isn’t ready.”
“She doesn’t need to be ready for you to control her.”
Then:
“And keep Jasper away from her company.”
Naomi stopped breathing.
Charles:
“They’re not even dating.”
Evelyn:
“Exactly.”
The recording ended.
The room remained silent.
Naomi looked at the date.
Five weeks before she met Jasper.
Charles had known Jasper.
Her mother had warned him not to bring Jasper near Naomi’s company.
Five weeks later, Jasper introduced himself to Naomi at a charity gala Charles had insisted she attend.
Naomi suddenly remembered Charles smiling when he saw them speaking.
At the time, she thought he was happy for her.
Now she wondered whether the meeting had been accidental at all.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
His expression changed.
“What?”
He ended the call.
“Jasper’s lawyer contacted us.”
Naomi’s stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Jasper wants to tell you how you really met.”
May you like
Naomi stared at her mother’s letter.
The marriage she had thought was separate from the corporate conspiracy might have started inside it.
