Chapter 11 - Naomi Learned Why Jasper Really Wanted the Board SeatJasper’s financial records revealed another motive.

Debt.
Not ordinary debt.
$3.6 million.
Private investment losses.
Naomi stared at the report.
“He never told me.”
Grant shook his head.
“Most was through entities not jointly held.”
Jasper had invested in two technology startups and a luxury rental project.
All failed.
He borrowed against his consulting company.
Then borrowed again.
Charles knew.
Naomi understood immediately.
“He offered to fix it.”
“Yes.”
Payments from Hawthorne-controlled entities covered Jasper’s interest expenses.
Then Charles promised a board role carrying large compensation.
Vice chairman.
Influence.
Status.
A way to escape debt without telling Naomi.
Jasper joined the next interview remotely.
Naomi asked:
“Why didn’t you tell me you lost three million dollars?”
“Because I knew what you would think.”
“What?”
“That I was irresponsible.”
“Were you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why does hiding it improve anything?”
“I was ashamed.”
The same engine again.
Shame.
Charles’s favorite currency.
Jasper continued.
“I wanted one thing that wasn’t yours.”
Naomi felt the sentence.
“My investment?”
“My success.”
His voice cracked.
“Your house had your name. Your company had your name. Every room we entered, people knew who you were.”
“And you hated me for it.”
“No.”
“I hated myself beside you.”
Naomi looked away.
That was more honest.
Still painful.
“Charles knew?”
“Yes.”
“He paid your debt?”
“Some interest.”
“And promised a title.”
“Yes.”
“And in return?”
“Information at first.”
“What information?”
“Your schedule.”
“Deals?”
“Yes.”
“Board relationships?”
“Yes.”
“Personal emotions?”
Jasper looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“Then signatures.”
“Yes.”
“And eventually helping remove me.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Naomi nodded.
There it was.
A complete progression.
Not one day deciding to betray his wife.
A series of smaller choices, each easier to justify because the previous one already existed.
Then:
“Why accuse Elise?”
Jasper breathed slowly.
“She found the Armitage folder.”
“That still doesn’t explain why you chose that accusation.”
His face tightened.
Naomi waited.
Finally:
“Because I knew you would react fastest.”
The answer chilled her.
“You chose the lie most likely to bypass my judgment.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I would protect you.”
“Yes.”
“You turned my love into a weapon.”
Jasper cried.
“Yes.”
Naomi felt tears but refused to let them move the conversation away from him.
“Had you used similar accusations before?”
“Brooke.”
Naomi’s chest tightened.
“What exactly did you do?”
“I told HR she accessed our messages.”
“Did she?”
“No.”
“Did you fabricate evidence?”
“Yes.”
Naomi closed her eyes.
“Anyone else?”
“Ava.”
Naomi looked up sharply.
Jasper nodded.
“She found the draft continuity proxy.”
“What did you do?”
“I told Charles.”
“And?”
“He accused her of taking files.”
“Was that false?”
“She copied them.”
“For evidence?”
“Yes.”
Naomi felt sick.
Ava had been fired for the very action that might have exposed the scheme two years earlier.
“Did you know Charles would fire her?”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop him?”
“No.”
Jasper looked down.
Naomi finally understood something.
Elise was not Jasper’s first emergency.
She was simply the first one with witnesses.
Three people still connected.
Three people who made the lie fail before it hardened into company record.
Then Jasper said:
“I’ll testify.”
Naomi did not react.
“Against Charles?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s right.”
She stared.
“Try again.”
Jasper flinched.
“Because he used me.”
“Closer.”
“And because I don’t want to go to prison for everything.”
“Closer.”
Jasper looked at her.
“And because I finally understand what I did.”
Naomi did not know if she believed the last part.
Maybe partly.
Human motives rarely arrived pure.
Outside counsel began preparing cooperation.
Jasper handed over messages.
One thread with Charles stood out.
CHARLES: Elise is becoming a problem.
JASPER: I can handle her.
CHARLES: Transfer her.
JASPER: Naomi trusts her.
CHARLES: Then make Naomi stop trusting her.
Naomi felt cold.
Jasper had not been explicitly told how.
But the objective was clear.
Another message two weeks later:
JASPER: She found Armitage.
CHARLES: Then this accelerates.
JASPER: Naomi will ask questions.
CHARLES: Give her a different question.
Naomi stared.
A different question.
That was exactly what Jasper did.
Instead of:
Why is Armitage receiving millions?
He created:
Did Elise assault my husband?
Naomi looked at Jasper.
“You didn’t invent the concept alone.”
“No.”
“But you chose the accusation.”
“Yes.”
Then Grant found a later message.
JASPER: If this destroys Elise, that’s on you.
CHARLES: No. That will be on you.
Jasper stared at the words.
Charles had warned him.
Not morally.
Strategically.
He wanted Jasper to understand responsibility would be his if the plan failed.
Jasper had continued anyway.
Then another message.
CHARLES: After Naomi steps down, we’ll discuss your seat.
JASPER: You promised vice chairman.
CHARLES: Nothing exists until the board votes.
Jasper looked up.
“He never intended it.”
Naomi felt almost no sympathy.
“You were willing to take my company for a promise that wasn’t even real.”
His face collapsed.
“Yes.”
Then Daniel entered.
“Charles has been charged.”
Naomi stood.
“With?”
“Wire fraud, conspiracy, obstruction, misuse of corporate funds.”
“Anything related to the Burn File?”
“Potential witness intimidation charges under review.”
Naomi exhaled.
Finally.
Then Daniel added:
“He wants to cooperate.”
Naomi laughed in disbelief.
“Against Jasper?”
“And several others.”
Jasper stared.
Charles was already moving to save himself.
Then Daniel said:
“There’s one person he specifically claims was the true architect of Project Restore.”
Naomi frowned.
“Jasper?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at her.
“Your mother.”
Naomi stopped breathing.
Charles was prepared to blame Evelyn Sterling.
May you like
A dead woman who could not answer.
And he claimed he had documents proving she created the first version of the succession plan years before her death.
