Chapter 13 - VALERIE’S OWN NANNY DISAPPEARED TOODorothy Hale was sixty-nine when Valerie found her.

Retired in North Carolina.

Valerie’s mother Evelyn initially refused contact info.

“Why stir past?”

“Because I need.”

Evelyn sighed.

Eventually.

Valerie wrote first:

I was eight when you left. I was told you chose another job. I recently learned that may not be true. I do not want anything from you except, if you are comfortable, the truth.

Dorothy called.

Voice older but familiar.

Valerie cried immediately.

“Miss Valerie?”

That name.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“My mother fired you because I loved you?”

Silence.

“She thought attachment unhealthy.”

Valerie closed eyes.

Exact.

“Did you want leave?”

“No.”

“I needed work.”

“She gave severance.”

“Told me no contact because clean break.”

Valerie sobbed.

“I thought I did something.”

“No.”

“Never.”

“Why didn’t you contact when adult?”

Dorothy:

“I thought you forgot.”

“And boundary.”

“And maybe pride.”

Valerie saw.

Her mother had repeated own logic.

She confronted Evelyn.

“You made me think she left.”

“You were child.”

“You protected yourself.”

Evelyn looked hurt.

“I wanted you attached to family.”

“By removing someone?”

“You became independent.”

Valerie laughed bitterly.

“I became afraid to need.”

Silence.

Evelyn’s face changed.

She had not considered.

“I did what advisers said.”

“I did too.”

There.

Generational.

Valerie told story Mabel.

Not seeking sympathy.

Mabel listened.

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I can be sorry you were hurt.”

Valerie nodded.

“Does this make what I did less bad?”

“No.”

Valerie smiled sadly.

“I knew you’d say.”

“Understanding is not acquittal.”

But it offered path.

Valerie began rebuilding relationship with Jasper not by removing caregivers but being present.

Storms.

Breakfast.

School.

Dorothy and Valerie exchanged occasional letters.

No instant mother figure reunion.

A past wound named.

Evelyn eventually apologized.

Not perfect.

She said:

“I was jealous too.”

Valerie laughed through tears.

Cycles.

The difference now:

May you like

Jasper would know.

No one would tell him love disappeared for his own good.
