Chapter 9 - ELLIOT COMES HOME EARLYElliot had already come home early from London, but emotionally he arrived much later.

Weeks after, Jasper asked at breakfast:

“Dad, what’s my teacher’s name?”

Elliot froze.

“Ms. Parker.”

Jasper grinned.

“Mrs. Parker.”

“Close.”

“What’s my best friend?”

“Leo.”

“No.”

“Sam?”

“No.”

Elliot looked.

“Ethan?”

“Dad.”

“Okay. Tell.”

“Micah.”

He knew Micah existed.

Forgot.

Jasper laughed.

Elliot did not.

Mabel knew.

That thought appeared.

He stopped himself calling her.

Instead he made note.

Not outsource.

He emailed teacher respectfully:

“I’m working to be more present. Could I receive class updates directly rather than through household staff?”

Mrs. Parker:

“Of course. You were already on distribution.”

He checked spam.

There.

He had ignored.

Humbling.

He rearranged work.

Not quit.

He ran investment firm division.

Travel mattered.

He reduced overnight by thirty percent.

Delegated.

Some colleagues irritated.

Company survived.

He attended pickup Wednesdays.

Other parents surprised.

One:

“Oh, Mabel usually.”

“Yes.”

“I’m learning.”

He did.

Jasper taught.

Favorite sandwich.

Which playground.

Soccer schedule.

Elliot made mistakes.

Forgot library book.

Arrived ten minutes late once.

No one died.

He apologized.

This was parenting without Mabel safety net.

Valerie also changed.

They coordinated rather than assume staff.

Patrice managed house within defined hours.

A new after-school caregiver, Sofia Barnes, worked three afternoons under contract.

Valerie initially feared Jasper attaching again.

Therapist:

“That is goal of safe caregiving.”

Valerie sighed.

Sofia played chess.

Jasper loved.

Valerie noticed jealousy and did not fire.

Progress.

Elliot visited Mabel weekly at first.

Too much.

She said:

“You don’t have to check.”

“I want.”

“Do you?”

“Or guilt?”

He thought.

“Both.”

“Then every other week.”

He obeyed.

Mabel wanted relationship not penance.

She told:

“Don’t make me project.”

He understood.

Elliot also confronted his childhood.

Mabel had cared for him too, though less intensely than Jasper.

After mother Cecily busy with foundation and father deceased? Elliot’s father maybe died when Elliot teen. Mabel was consistent.

He had called her “Mabs” as child.

Stopped when college because embarrassment in front friends.

Mabel remembered.

Did not mention.

Elliot apologized.

“For what?”

“I acted like you were invisible when friends.”

“You were sixteen.”

“Still.”

“Teenagers are terrible.”

“I survived.”

No need excavation every hurt.

He smiled.

The father who returned early learned that one dramatic flight home did not erase years.

Real change repetitive.

Boring.

He went home before bedtime.

Often.

Jasper stopped asking:

“Are you leaving tomorrow?”

That was progress.

One night thunderstorm.

Jasper called:

“Dad?”

Elliot entered.

“What do I do?”

Jasper:

“Nothing.”

“Sit hall.”

Elliot sat.

Door three inches.

No talking.

Twenty minutes.

Then Jasper:

“You still?”

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

An hour later, Elliot woke on hallway floor.

Valerie saw.

She smiled gently.

No Mabel required.

Next morning Elliot texted Mabel:

Thunderstorm successful. Back hurts.

Mabel replied:

You’re forty-four. Dramatic.

He laughed.

Not dependency.

Relationship.

May you like

He had come home early physically.

Now he was learning how to stay.
