Chapter 19 - “I WAS YOUR HOUSEKEEPER. I AM NOT YOUR PROPERTY.”Valerie and Mabel’s biggest confrontation came months after things seemed calmer.

Because healing is not straight.
Jasper had bad week at school.
Bullied? Maybe friend conflict.
He begged Mabel stay overnight mansion.
Mabel said no.
Valerie, exhausted, snapped:
“Would it kill you to stay one night?”
Mabel stared.
Old pattern.
Valerie immediately regretted.
But Mabel answered:
“That sentence is why I can’t.”
“I’m sorry.”
“You asked because Jasper upset.”
“Yes.”
“And because you’re tired.”
“Yes.”
“And you know I love him.”
“Yes.”
“Then love becomes lever again.”
Valerie’s face reddened.
“I just asked.”
“Employer used to ‘just ask’ too.”
“I’m not employer.”
“Exactly.”
Silence.
Valerie:
“He needs you.”
Mabel:
“He wants me.”
“Different.”
“He’s crying.”
“He can cry and be safe.”
Valerie’s eyes filled.
“You sound cold.”
Mabel became angry.
“I gave thirty-six years.”
“Do not call me cold because I say no one night.”
Valerie flinched.
Mabel continued:
“I was your housekeeper.”
“I am not your property.”
The sentence hung.
Valerie whispered:
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“Because every time family gets hard, someone looks at me like retirement was betrayal.”
Valerie sat.
“That’s true.”
Mabel breathed.
“I love Jasper.”
“I will see tomorrow as planned.”
“I won’t teach him crying makes retired caregiver cancel life.”
Valerie nodded.
“What do I do tonight?”
Mabel softened.
“Be his mother.”
Valerie laughed through tears.
“That simple?”
“No.”
“Nothing simple.”
Mabel left.
Valerie handled.
Jasper cried.
She sat.
No Mabel.
Morning better.
She texted Mabel:
He slept. You were right. I’m sorry I used his sadness to pressure.
Mabel:
Thank you. See at 2.
May you like
Boundary survived.
That was more meaningful than apology speech.
