Chapter 16 - THE RENOVATION STOPSThe demolition permit was withdrawn.

Architect redesigned.

Project delay cost Valerie $310,000 in fees/deposits.

She could afford.

Still hurt.

One investor withdrew.

Another remained.

Valerie worked.

No husband bailout.

She had her own project company.

Elliot offered bridge.

She declined partly pride, partly growth.

She found alternate.

Carriage house converted.

The final event space was smaller and more beautiful.

Architect said:

“Constraint improved.”

Valerie laughed.

Mabel attended opening.

She saw cottage lights from lawn.

Still standing.

Valerie gave short speech:

“Projects change when facts change.”

No public self-flagellation.

After, she told Mabel:

“I hated you for three days when permit stopped.”

Mabel laughed.

“Only three?”

“Maybe nine.”

“Thank you honesty.”

“I knew not your fault by day one.”

“Feeling took longer.”

Mabel:

“Feelings slow.”

Valerie:

“Dr. Morris?”

“No. Age.”

They smiled.

Renovation stopping represented consequence without destruction.

Valerie’s dream did not die.

It adapted.

This helped her understand Mabel’s no was not attack.

It was boundary.
