Chapter 18 - Richard Offered Daniel a DealRichard asked to meet before entering his plea.

Daniel refused twice.

Accepted the third request.

Public legal conference room.

Attorneys nearby.

No Lily.

Richard looked older than six months earlier.

Weight loss.

Gray deeper.

No tie.

Daniel hated that part of him still wanted to ask whether his father was eating.

He didn’t.

Richard began:

“I’m pleading guilty to the financial counts and obstruction-related conduct.”

Daniel said nothing.

“Monica’s case is more complicated.”

“Because you still deny directing exactly what she did.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her to make Lily unable to resist?”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I told her to get the envelope without Lily stopping her.”

Daniel felt sick.

“Thank you for finally saying the whole sentence.”

Richard looked down.

“I did not imagine—”

Daniel raised one hand.

“No.”

Richard stopped.

“Your imagination is not the boundary.”

Silence.

Then Richard nodded.

“You’re right.”

That was new.

Daniel leaned back.

“Why am I here?”

Richard took out a document.

“My settlement proposal.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Of course.”

“It’s not what you think.”

“That’s usually when it is.”

Richard pushed it across.

He would liquidate almost everything outside protected retirement funds.

Repay Lily’s trust.

Repay the employee reserve.

Fund independent claims review for any clients affected by Steven Cole’s original misconduct.

Resign permanently from Harper & Cole.

No family member would hold fiduciary authority over Lily’s trust.

Daniel looked up.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing financial.”

“Then what?”

Richard hesitated.

“I want you to support a statement that I am not a continuing danger to Lily.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You want access.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Sentencing.”

Of course.

Richard continued:

“I’m not asking you to lie.”

“You are asking me to predict.”

“I am asking what you believe.”

Daniel stared.

“What I believe is that you love her.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“I do.”

“I also believe you convinced yourself loving her allowed you to create a fake document making another woman her mother.”

Richard looked down.

“I know.”

“You gave Monica Lily’s seat.”

“Yes.”

“You told her to overcome resistance.”

“Yes.”

“And you did it because you thought getting Claire’s evidence back would let you fix the money before anyone got hurt.”

Richard whispered:

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“That belief is exactly what made you dangerous.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Daniel continued:

“You don’t hurt people because you want them hurt.”

“You hurt them because you decide your goal matters more than their right to say no.”

Silence.

Richard’s face collapsed.

Not dramatically.

A small surrender.

“What do I do with that?”

he asked.

Daniel stared.

For once, his father was not asking for a legal strategy.

He sounded lost.

“I don’t know.”

Richard laughed faintly.

“You always hated that answer.”

“I’m learning.”

They sat.

Then Richard said:

“I thought if I repaid everything before anyone knew, no one would actually be harmed.”

“Claire lost months fighting you.”

“Yes.”

“Emma lost work.”

“Yes.”

“People at your firm worked under a lie.”

“Yes.”

“I signed something I never agreed to.”

“Yes.”

“Lily—”

Richard’s voice broke.

“I know.”

Daniel stopped.

No need to say more.

Then Richard pushed the settlement paper closer.

“I’m doing this whether you support me or not.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Good.”

Richard nodded.

“That’s what Claire would say.”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

Then:

“Did she hate me?”

Daniel almost laughed.

“Seriously?”

“I need to know.”

“No.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“How do you know?”

“Because she spent six months trying to give you a way out.”

Richard covered his mouth.

Daniel continued:

“She was furious.”

“She was scared.”

“She wanted you removed from the trust.”

“But she didn’t hate you.”

Richard cried quietly.

Daniel did not comfort him.

Not because he wanted punishment.

Because this sadness belonged to Richard.

May you like

He was allowed to feel it without Daniel fixing it.

Maybe that was the first boundary between them that had ever been honest.
