Chapter 2 - Someone Had Given Monica the Seat MapLily woke fully in a hospital room three hours later.

Daniel was sitting beside her.

He had not moved except when doctors required it.

The medical team had been careful with their language.

So was Daniel.

No speculation.

No dramatic conclusions.

Lily had experienced a brief period of reduced responsiveness after Monica pressed the cloth against her.

She was stable now.

Alert.

Her tests had not shown an ongoing medical emergency.

That was enough for Daniel.

For now.

Lily opened her eyes.

“Dad?”

“I’m here.”

“Where are we?”

“Hospital.”

Her face tightened.

“The plane.”

“I know.”

“Where’s that lady?”

“She can’t come near you.”

Lily stared at him.

“She said she was my mom.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I heard.”

“That was weird.”

“Yes.”

“My mom is dead.”

The words still hurt.

Claire Harper had died eighteen months earlier after a two-year fight with cancer.

Lily had been eight.

Daniel had thought the worst thing his daughter would ever survive was losing her mother.

He no longer trusted that thought.

A federal investigator named Agent Lena Brooks entered later with a local detective.

Because the incident happened aboard a commercial aircraft and crossed jurisdictions, several agencies were involved.

Lena kept the conversation simple.

“Lily, you don’t have to tell me everything today.”

Lily nodded.

“Did you know Monica before the flight?”

“No.”

“Did she speak to you?”

“A little.”

“What about?”

“She asked if I was traveling alone.”

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

“What did you say?”

“That my dad was there.”

“Did you point to him?”

Lily shook her head.

“I said he was sitting somewhere else.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

At that moment, he had still believed he was assigned farther back.

Lena asked:

“Did Monica ask where?”

“I said row twenty-three.”

Daniel looked at the agent.

Monica may not have known Daniel’s face.

She only knew his expected seat.

That explained how the plan could have seemed possible.

Monica had been given data.

Not necessarily a photograph.

Lena asked one more question.

“Was she interested in your backpack?”

Lily frowned.

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What?”

“She asked if I wanted help putting it under the seat.”

“Did you let her?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Mom’s envelope was inside.”

Daniel went still.

Claire’s envelope.

The entire reason for the Chicago trip.

Two nights earlier, Lily had been cleaning a shelf in her bedroom when she found an old copy of The Secret Garden.

Claire used to read it to her.

Inside the back cover was a sealed blue envelope.

On the front:

FOR DANIEL — IF LILY FINDS THIS FIRST, TAKE IT TO EMMA BROOKS IN CHICAGO.

Daniel had almost opened it immediately.

Instead, he called Emma.

Emma Brooks had been Claire’s accountant for years before Claire became ill.

Emma sounded shaken when Daniel read the inscription.

“Bring it unopened.”

“Why?”

“Because that’s what Claire would have wanted.”

Daniel had told exactly three people about the trip.

Emma.

His office assistant.

And his father.

Richard Harper.

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Where is the envelope?”

“My backpack.”

The backpack had remained with authorities while the aircraft scene was processed.

Lena said:

“We have it.”

“Is the envelope still there?”

“Yes.”

Daniel exhaled.

Then Lena placed a clear evidence sleeve on the table.

Inside was a printed sheet recovered from Monica’s handbag.

Daniel stared.

A photograph of Lily.

School picture.

Two years old.

Under it:

LILY CLAIRE HARPER — 10

18B

DANIEL HARPER — 23C

Then:

BLUE ENVELOPE IN CHILD’S CARRY-ON.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Lena watched his face.

“You recognize the reference?”

“Yes.”

“What is the blue envelope?”

“I don’t know what’s inside.”

“Who knew Lily had it?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Three people.”

“Names.”

“Emma Brooks.”

“My assistant, Nicole Dean.”

Then the third name stuck in his throat.

“My father.”

“Richard Harper?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You know him?”

“He’s listed in your emergency contacts.”

Richard was sixty-six.

Founding partner of Harper & Cole, one of the most respected estate law firms in Arizona.

He had handled Daniel’s finances since Daniel was old enough to have finances.

He had helped prepare Claire’s estate.

He had held Lily at her mother’s funeral while Daniel stood at the grave unable to speak.

Daniel almost laughed at himself.

“My father didn’t send someone after Lily.”

Lena did not react.

“I didn’t say he did.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Sorry.”

“I’m asking who had access.”

“That’s different.”

“Yes.”

The distinction mattered.

Then Lena produced a second item.

A document Monica had been carrying.

It looked official at first glance.

Temporary caregiver authorization.

Lily’s full name.

Date of birth.

Home address.

Daniel’s signature.

And Monica listed as:

MONICA HART — MATERNAL GUARDIAN

Daniel stared.

“That signature isn’t mine.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“And Monica Hart?”

“Never heard the name.”

Lena nodded.

“Monica’s legal surname is Sloane.”

Daniel looked up.

“So the document is false.”

“Apparently.”

“Where did she get Lily’s date of birth?”

“That’s one of the questions.”

Daniel looked again.

The document contained details that were not public.

Lily’s pediatric practice.

A previous home address.

Claire’s maiden name.

The last four digits of an old family trust account.

His skin went cold.

Those details existed in one place.

Harper & Cole’s estate files.

His father’s firm.

Then Lena’s phone buzzed.

She read a message.

“What?”

Daniel asked.

“We have preliminary information from Monica’s phone.”

“About who sent her?”

“Not yet.”

Lena looked at him.

“But there’s a text from last night.”

She turned the screen.

Unknown number.

Seat 18B confirmed. Father stays in 23C. Do not improvise unless necessary. Get the envelope.

Daniel read it twice.

Then another message.

If she resists, keep her quiet long enough to finish.

His stomach tightened.

No details.

No explanation.

Just intent.

Then a final message:

R.H. says this ends tomorrow.

Daniel stared at the initials.

R.H.

Richard Harper.

His father.

May you like

Or somebody wanted Daniel to think it was.

Either possibility terrified him.
