Chapter 9 - Richard Had Been Inside Claire’s OfficeDaniel returned home with Lily four days later.

Security had changed.
Richard’s access code was disabled.
The family office account was frozen.
All trust authority moved temporarily under court-supervised review.
Daniel hated every step.
He did them anyway.
Lily walked into the mansion and stopped at Claire’s office door.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Are we going inside?”
Daniel looked.
Claire’s office had been mostly untouched since her death.
Not preserved perfectly.
Used occasionally.
But still hers.
“I think we need to.”
Lily entered first.
She went to the bookshelf.
Pulled out The Secret Garden.
Empty now.
“That’s where the envelope was.”
“I know.”
“Mom wanted me to find it?”
“Eventually.”
“Why not just give it to you?”
Daniel smiled sadly.
“Your mom knew I lose things.”
Lily almost smiled.
Then:
“Did Grandpa know?”
“Not exactly.”
She watched him.
“Did Grandpa send Monica?”
The question hurt.
Daniel sat on the edge of Claire’s desk.
“Investigators believe he hired her to get the envelope.”
Lily looked toward the floor.
“Why?”
“Because your mom found financial things she thought were wrong.”
“Money?”
“Yes.”
“Mine?”
“Some of it became yours after Mom died.”
Lily frowned.
“I don’t want it.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“Money isn’t bad because adults made bad choices around it.”
“It made Monica come.”
“No.”
Daniel chose the words carefully.
“People made Monica come.”
That distinction mattered.
Lily sat in Claire’s old chair.
“Is Grandpa bad?”
Daniel had asked versions of that question about his father for four days.
“I think Grandpa did bad things.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know.”
She waited.
Daniel sighed.
“I don’t know how to make one word hold everything.”
Lily looked dissatisfied.
Good.
Maybe easy answers should feel unsatisfying.
Then Rosa knocked.
She had worked for Daniel and Claire for eleven years.
Her eyes were red.
“I need to tell you something.”
Daniel stood.
“What?”
“About Mr. Richard.”
Lily started to rise.
Daniel looked at her.
“Adult conversation.”
She groaned.
“Fine.”
Rosa waited until Lily left.
Then:
“He came here twice when you were traveling.”
“When?”
“After Mrs. Harper died.”
“What did he want?”
“Her office.”
Daniel felt cold.
“Did you let him in?”
“He had a key.”
Of course.
“What did he take?”
“The laptop.”
“Anything else?”
Rosa hesitated.
“A red folder.”
Daniel frowned.
“What red folder?”
“I don’t know.”
“He said estate papers.”
“Did he search?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Hours.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Rosa looked ashamed.
“He said you knew.”
The sentence had become a weapon.
Daniel knows.
Daniel approved.
Daniel signed.
Richard’s greatest power came from being believable when speaking for his son.
Rosa continued.
“Mrs. Harper once told me something.”
“When?”
“Before hospice.”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“What?”
“If Mr. Richard ever came into her office alone after she died, I should write down what he touched.”
Daniel stared.
“Did you?”
Rosa nodded.
She opened a drawer outside the office.
Removed a small notebook.
Dates.
Times.
Objects.
Richard’s first visit:
Opened filing cabinet.
Removed copied trust statements.
Photographed desk calendar.
Left with red folder.
Second visit:
Monica arrived.
Took silver laptop.
Richard was present for seventeen minutes.
Then left before Monica.
Daniel looked at Rosa.
“Claire asked you to do this?”
“Yes.”
“And not tell me?”
“She said to tell you if you ever asked what disappeared.”
Daniel almost laughed.
Claire had constructed a family of reluctant witnesses because she knew one person might fail.
Emma.
Rosa.
Lily.
Daniel himself.
No single guardian of truth.
Then Rosa turned another page.
“Mr. Richard forgot something.”
“What?”
“He put a paper in the trash.”
Daniel stared.
She had saved it.
A printed email.
From Richard to Monica.
Three months ago.
Laptop may contain copies. Remove drive only if necessary. Better to take whole device and make it look like household disposal.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Then:
Do not involve Lily. She does not know anything.
Daniel stopped.
Three months ago, Richard wanted Lily uninvolved.
What changed?
Why did he later target her directly?
The answer was obvious.
Lily found the blue envelope.
Richard discovered she knew where the key was.
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
His father’s line had moved.
First, documents.
Then deception.
Then a child.
Richard had always told himself he was protecting family.

But somewhere between Claire’s office and that airplane—
protecting the family had become protecting himself from it.
