Chapter 7 - Emma Had Been Fired for Asking One QuestionEmma Brooks had not retired from Harper & Cole.

Richard fired her.
That was the first thing she admitted after they left the bank.
Daniel stared.
“You told me you wanted fewer clients.”
“I lied.”
“Why?”
“Claire asked me to.”
“That’s becoming a crowded sentence.”
Emma accepted it.
They sat in a private room at the hotel while Lily watched movies with a trusted family friend under security.
Emma explained.
Four years earlier, she had been an outside accountant serving several Harper & Cole family trusts.
She noticed Juniper Ridge.
At first, nothing looked illegal.
The trust documents allowed alternative investments.
But one thing bothered her.
The returns were booked before cash actually arrived.
“Why does that matter?”
Daniel asked.
“It made Juniper look healthier than it was.”
“Accounting fraud?”
“Potentially misleading internal reporting.”
“Who benefited?”
“Richard.”
Because a healthy-looking asset prevented deeper review.
Emma asked for underlying bank records.
Richard delayed.
Then gave partial records.
Emma asked again.
Three days later, Harper & Cole terminated the accounting contract.
Official reason:
“Loss of confidence.”
Emma did not fight.
Why?
Claire was already sick.
Richard threatened no one directly.
He simply reminded Emma that several of her largest clients came through Harper & Cole.
“If I accused him without enough evidence, I could lose my practice.”
“So you backed off.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stared.
Emma continued:
“Then Claire called me.”
“What did she say?”
“That I was a coward.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“That sounds like Claire.”
“She was right.”
Emma began helping privately.
Claire obtained statements through her own beneficiary rights.
Emma analyzed.
They built the Box 417 file.
“Why Chicago?”
“The trust’s original bank was here.”
“And Richard didn’t know?”
“He knew Claire had some documents in Chicago.”
“Not where.”
“Correct.”
Daniel thought of the plane.
Richard knew enough to want the blue envelope.
If he got the key before Daniel reached Emma, Box 417 stayed closed.
Maybe forever.
Then Emma said:
“There is something else you should know about Monica.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“Claire believed Monica stole internal files before she left Harper & Cole.”
“Richard said she altered expenses.”
“Both may be true.”
“Why would he continue using her?”
“Because she knew enough to hurt him.”
Daniel frowned.
“So they controlled each other.”
“Possibly.”
Emma opened a document.
An email from Monica to Richard three years earlier.
You promised this would be the last retrieval.
Richard:
It is.
Monica:
You said that before.
Daniel’s skin went cold.
This was not a normal former employee.
Richard had been using Monica repeatedly.
Then a message from two years ago:
If you need me again, the price doubles.
Richard replied:
Understood.
Emma said:
“Claire found these in an archive.”
“Why didn’t she go to police?”
“Because she couldn’t prove what the retrievals involved.”
“Could have been legal.”
“Yes.”
Daniel hated reasonable ambiguity.
Then his phone rang.
Agent Lena.
“We have an update.”
“Monica?”
“She wants to talk.”
Daniel stood.
“About my father?”
“Apparently.”
“Is she cooperating?”
“She has counsel.”
“What did she say?”
Lena paused.
“She says Richard Harper hired her.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
There it was.
Then:
“But she claims he never told her Lily would be harmed.”
Daniel’s eyes opened.
“What does that mean?”
“She says she was told to recover the blue envelope.”
“How?”
“Her lawyer will provide details in an interview.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“She pressed something against my daughter’s mouth.”
“I know.”
“She claimed Lily was her child.”
“I know.”
“So she understood this wasn’t a document pickup.”
“Yes.”
Lena remained calm.
“That contradiction is one reason we’re interviewing her.”
Daniel sat again.
“Did Richard give her the fake caregiver document?”
“She says yes.”
His chest tightened.
“Can she prove it?”
“She says there’s an email.”
Daniel looked at Emma.
“What does it say?”
Lena answered:
“Monica asked what happens if someone sees her beside Lily.”
“And?”
“The response said…”
Lena hesitated.
“‘You’re the mother until you have the envelope.’”
Daniel went completely still.
The lie on the plane had not been improvised.
It had been rehearsed.
Richard had told Monica exactly who to pretend to be.
May you like
And he had chosen the one identity Daniel would know was impossible.
Because Daniel was never supposed to be close enough to hear it.
