PLEASE SAVE MY MOM / Chapter 10 / 25

Chapter 10 - EMMA’S FIRST TRUTHEmma gave her formal statement in a small interview room painted pale green.

Sarah watched through one-way glass with Hannah Cole.

A child specialist named Dr. Maya Evans sat across from Emma.

There were no uniforms in the room.

No bright lights.

No one told Emma what to say.

“Can you tell me why the police came to your house?” Maya asked.

Emma folded her hands in her lap.

“I called them.”

“How?”

“On the kitchen phone.”

“What happened before that?”

Emma looked toward the mirror.

Sarah knew her daughter could not see her, but she placed her palm against the glass anyway.

“Daddy was yelling.”

“What was he yelling about?”

“Papers.”

“What kind of papers?”

“I don’t know. Mommy said he borrowed money.”

Maya nodded without reacting.

“What happened next?”

“Mommy had a bag. Daddy saw it.”

“Then what?”

Emma’s fingers tightened.

“He asked where we were going. Mommy said Aunt Rachel’s house.”

Sarah’s breath caught.

Emma remembered everything.

“Did your father touch your mother?”

“He held her arm.”

“How?”

Emma demonstrated by gripping her own wrist.

“Was your mother able to move away?”

“No.”

“What did you do?”

“I picked up the phone.”

“What did your father do?”

“He pulled it away. The cord broke.”

“Did he say anything to you?”

Emma stared at the floor.

“He said if I ever called the police again, I would be sorry.”

Maya waited.

Children often filled silence when they felt safe enough.

Emma swallowed.

“Then he made us walk outside.”

“How did he make you?”

“He said Mommy would stay outside alone if we didn’t follow.”

“Where did you go?”

“The horse stable.”

“Who lowered the bolt?”

“Daddy.”

“Could you see him do it?”

“Yes.”

“Did anyone tell you to say that?”

Emma looked offended.

“No.”

“Did your mother ask you to call for the officer?”

“No. She told me to stay inside.”

“Why did you call?”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because she was too scared.”

Behind the glass, Sarah covered her mouth.

Hannah placed a hand on her shoulder.

Maya gave Emma time to breathe.

“What did you think might happen if you stayed quiet?”

Emma wiped one cheek.

“I thought Daddy would come back when the light went out.”

“What did you think he would do?”

Emma looked toward the mirror again.

“He said accidents happen on farms.”

Maya’s voice remained gentle.

“What did that mean to you?”

Emma whispered something too quiet for the microphone.

Maya leaned closer.

“Can you say that again?”

Emma’s eyes stayed fixed on the mirror.

“I thought he was going to put Mommy in the old well.”

Sarah’s knees weakened.

Hannah caught her.

Inside the room, Emma continued.

“But there’s something I didn’t tell the officer.”

Maya did not rush her.

“What didn’t you tell him?”

Emma glanced toward the closed door, as if Robert might be standing behind it.

“Before Daddy locked us in, he made Mommy record a message.”

Sarah went still.

She had not mentioned a recording.

Maya’s expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“What did the message say?”

Emma repeated the words exactly.

“I’m leaving Robert. Don’t look for me or the girls.”

“Where is that recording now?”

“I don’t know.”

But Sarah did.

Robert’s telephone lay on the kitchen counter when police arrived.

May you like

If the message was still there, he possessed a recording designed to make five people disappear without raising an alarm.

And the police had not yet found the phone.
