PLEASE SAVE MY MOM / Chapter 5 / 25

Chapter 5 - THE MAN WITH THE BOTTLEA second cruiser arrived five minutes later.

Officer Lucas Reed kept Robert near the fence while his partner, Officer Elena Brooks, brought blankets for Sarah and the girls.

Robert used those five minutes carefully.

He did not shout.

He did not threaten.

He spoke in the measured voice of a concerned husband.

“Sarah has been struggling since Ava was born.”

Sarah stared at him from the stable entrance.

“That isn’t true.”

Robert continued as though she had not spoken.

“She becomes overwhelmed. Sometimes she imagines things. Tonight she packed a bag and tried to leave with all four children.”

Lucas glanced toward the farmhouse.

“Was anyone stopping her?”

“I was trying to calm her down.”

“By locking her in a stable?”

“I didn’t lock her in.”

Emma stepped forward.

“Yes, you did.”

Robert looked at her with wounded disappointment.

“Emma, this is an adult conversation.”

“You put the metal thing down.”

“She saw me check the door.”

“You said we wouldn’t be there in the morning.”

Sarah touched Emma’s shoulder.

Robert sighed.

“This is what Sarah has taught them to do. Repeat whatever she says.”

Elena guided the children toward the cruiser.

Robert immediately moved away from the fence.

“Where are you taking them?”

Lucas blocked his path.

“Stay where you are.”

“I am their father.”

“And they are cold, frightened and in need of medical evaluation.”

“They don’t need a hospital.”

Ava began crying again.

Robert’s voice sharpened.

“Sarah, make her stop.”

Every person in the yard became still.

Robert seemed to realize too late what he had said.

Lucas watched Sarah’s reaction.

She had flinched before Robert finished the sentence.

Elena noticed it too.

“Sir,” Lucas said, “have you consumed alcohol tonight?”

“No.”

Emma pointed toward a shadow near the stable wall.

“He had a bottle.”

Robert’s face tightened.

Lucas shone his flashlight in the direction she indicated.

A half-empty glass bottle lay in the grass.

Robert had hidden it behind a rain barrel before approaching the cruiser.

Lucas pulled on a glove and picked it up.

The bottle was cold, but Robert’s fingerprints were visible on the glass.

“That could belong to anyone,” Robert said.

“It was in his hand,” Emma insisted.

“Elena,” Lucas said, “please take the family to your vehicle.”

Sarah tried to walk, but her knees shook.

Emma took Mia’s hand.

Lily stayed beside Sarah.

Together, they crossed the yard under the flashing lights.

The warm farmhouse windows looked unreal now—beautiful, bright and completely separate from the life Sarah had lived inside them.

Robert watched.

“You cannot remove my daughters based on the story of an unstable woman.”

Lucas faced him.

“I can protect children during an active investigation.”

“Investigation of what?”

“Unlawful restraint, possible domestic assault and child endangerment.”

Robert laughed once.

“You found them sitting in a building on my property.”

“I found an exterior bolt locking them inside.”

“You don’t know who lowered it.”

Lucas pointed toward the small black camera clipped to the center of his uniform.

“My body camera has recorded your daughter’s statement, your wife’s condition and everything you’ve said since I arrived.”

For the first time, Robert looked uncertain.

Then he recovered.

“Good. It will show how cooperative I’ve been.”

Lucas did not respond.

He searched Robert for weapons and found none.

As he stepped back, something pale showed beneath Robert’s dark jacket.

A piece of paper had been folded into his inside pocket.

Robert quickly pushed it deeper.

Lucas noticed.

“What is that?”

“Nothing.”

“I need you to remove it slowly.”

Robert did not move.

Lucas repeated the command.

Robert finally pulled out the paper.

It was a bus schedule from Nashville to Louisville.

Four departure times had been circled.

Beside them, Robert had written five names.

Sarah.

Emma.

Lily.

Mia.

Ava.

May you like

But the handwriting beside the last bus did not say passengers.

It said gone by morning.
