PLEASE SAVE MY MOM / Chapter 7 / 25

Chapter 7 - FIVE FRIGHTENED FACESThe ambulance arrived without a siren.

Its white lights filled the yard while two paramedics examined Sarah and the girls inside the heated vehicle.

No one had serious physical injuries.

That did not mean they were unharmed.

A paramedic named Grace wrapped a clean bandage around Sarah’s wrist.

“How long have you had these bruises?”

Sarah looked toward the children.

Emma was helping Mia drink warm water from a paper cup.

“Tonight.”

Grace waited.

Sarah lowered her voice.

“Some are older.”

The paramedic documented each mark without judgment.

That quiet professionalism made Sarah want to cry.

For years, every injury had come with an explanation Robert selected for her.

She had fallen on the steps.

She had struck the kitchen cabinet.

She bruised easily.

Now Grace simply recorded what she saw.

Outside, Lucas removed a small brass key from Robert’s jacket.

“Where does this go?”

“My office.”

Sarah shook her head.

“His office key is silver.”

Robert glared at her.

Lucas placed the key in a separate evidence bag.

He had contacted a magistrate for an emergency search warrant based on the locked stable, the interrupted emergency call and evidence visible through the back door.

Until the warrant arrived, no one would enter the farmhouse.

Robert remained beside the fence, watched by Elena.

He looked sober now.

Not because the alcohol had left his body, but because fear had sharpened him.

Sarah stepped down from the ambulance.

Lucas approached her.

“I need to take your statement.”

“Will the girls hear?”

“We can speak inside the ambulance while Officer Brooks stays with them.”

Sarah looked at Emma.

The child sat upright, trying to listen to every adult conversation.

“No,” Sarah said. “If I disappear from her sight, she’ll think something happened.”

Lucas nodded.

“Then we stay where she can see you.”

They stood beside the open ambulance doors.

Sarah described the argument over the loan papers.

She explained the packed bag, the broken telephone and the walk across the yard.

“Did he physically force you into the stable?”

“He grabbed me. He told the girls that if they didn’t follow, he would leave me outside alone.”

“Did he threaten to hurt anyone?”

Sarah looked at Robert.

He was too far away to hear, but his eyes remained fixed on her.

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Sarah’s mouth became dry.

“He said accidents happen on farms.”

Lucas’s expression hardened.

“Did he explain what he meant?”

“He looked at the old well behind the stable.”

Lucas glanced toward the dark field.

A circular stone structure stood beyond the fence, partially hidden by weeds.

“Why didn’t you tell me that immediately?”

“Because he told me if I spoke, my daughters would pay for it.”

Emma appeared beside Sarah.

“No, Mom.”

Sarah turned in surprise.

Emma had slipped away from Elena.

The girl took her mother’s trembling hand.

“He said I would pay first.”

Sarah stared at her.

“When?”

“In the kitchen. When I touched the phone.”

Robert suddenly pushed away from the fence.

“She’s lying!”

Elena ordered him back.

He kept moving.

Lucas stepped between Robert and the family.

“Hands behind your back.”

Robert stopped.

“You’re arresting me because of an eight-year-old?”

“I am arresting you for unlawful imprisonment while we investigate the remaining offenses.”

Lucas secured the handcuffs.

Robert’s eyes never left Emma.

“You have destroyed this family.”

Emma moved behind Sarah.

Lucas guided Robert toward the second cruiser.

As they passed the stable, Robert leaned closer to Sarah.

His voice was barely more than a whisper.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

Lucas turned him toward the body camera.

“Would you like to repeat that?”

Robert said nothing.

Sarah’s fear returned with new force.

An arrest was not an ending.

Robert could be released.

He knew where they would go.

He knew every relative she might call.

She grabbed Lucas’s sleeve.

“Please.”

He stopped.

Sarah looked at the cruiser where Robert now sat.

“Don’t let him take them.”

Lucas followed her gaze.

Then he gave her the first promise she had trusted in years.

“Tonight, he will not get near any of you.”

May you like

Behind them, the magistrate approved the search warrant.

And the locked room in the farmhouse was about to be opened.
