Chapter 12 - The Uncle Who Had Been WatchingMichael Hale arrived that afternoon.

He walked into Whitmore Castle like a man who had been there many times before.
Tall.
Fifty-six.
Gray at the temples.
Calm.
Richard stood in the entrance hall.
The two men looked at each other.
No greeting.
No handshake.
Emily immediately understood.
They hated each other.
Michael looked at her.
His face softened.
“Emily.”
She felt a strange chill hearing her name from him.
“You know me.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Your entire life.”
Emily’s anger rose.
“Then where were you?”
Michael didn’t defend himself.
“Away.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
Richard watched silently.
Emily continued.
“My mother struggled for years.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“And you did nothing?”
“I sent money.”
“She never mentioned you.”
“She returned it.”
Emily stared.
“Why?”
“Because she didn’t trust the Hale family either.”
Lady Margaret entered.
Michael’s mother.
Her expression collapsed when she saw him.
“You came.”
“You told me.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“You knew he was alive.”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Wonderful. Anyone else in this family hiding relatives?”
Michael ignored him.
He handed Emily a folder.
“Your mother named me trustee.”
“So Victoria said.”
“She wasn’t lying.”
Emily opened the file.
Legal documents.
Signatures.
Her mother’s.
Michael’s.
“Why you?”
“Because Anna didn’t trust Richard.”
Richard’s face hardened.
Emily looked at him.
“Why?”
Michael answered.
“Because Richard once tried to destroy the trust.”
Silence.
Emily turned.
Richard looked pale.
“When?”
“1987.”
Emily stared.
“I was eight.”
Michael nodded.
“Anna was six.”
Richard spoke.
“I didn’t know Anna existed.”
Michael laughed.
“You knew there was a beneficiary.”
“I thought it was Eleanor.”
“And you tried to terminate the structure.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Because my father used it to hide criminal assets.”
Michael stepped closer.
“You tried to dissolve a trust whose beneficiary was a missing woman.”
“I was trying to clean the company.”
“And nearly erased Anna’s ownership.”
Richard looked at Emily.
“I didn’t know.”
Emily felt exhausted.
Every answer produced another betrayal.
“Did my mother know?”
Michael nodded.
“She found the filings years later.”
“So that’s why she didn’t trust Richard.”
“Yes.”
Richard sat down slowly.
“I understand.”
Michael looked at him.
“No. You don’t.”
Emily raised her voice.
“Enough.”
Both men stopped.
She looked at Michael.
“Why did my mother activate the trust six months ago?”
“Because she knew she was dying.”
Emily swallowed.
“And why didn’t she tell me?”
“She wanted you to have a choice.”
“What choice?”
“To claim it or walk away.”
Emily laughed weakly.
“You can’t walk away from something like this.”
“Yes, you can.”
Michael looked toward the castle walls.
“Your mother did.”
Emily froze.
“What?”
“She knew she controlled Whitmore Holdings for nearly fifteen years.”
Emily stared.
“She lived in a rented apartment.”
“She hated this family.”
“Then why activate it?”
“Because Victoria contacted her.”
Richard looked up.
“What?”
Michael nodded.
“Victoria discovered the trust while reviewing succession documents.”
Emily’s pulse quickened.
“She found my mother.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael looked at Victoria’s empty chair near the fireplace.
“To make a deal.”
“What deal?”
“Anna would surrender the shares.”
“And in return?”
“Victoria would pay her.”
Emily’s stomach turned.
“How much?”
“Twenty million dollars.”
Richard swore under his breath.
Emily asked, “Did my mother accept?”
Michael smiled faintly.
“No.”
“What did she do?”
“She told Victoria the inheritance was going to you.”
Emily closed her eyes.
That explained everything.
Victoria hadn’t hired Emily out of curiosity.
She had hired her because she knew Emily stood between her and everything she believed was hers.
Michael continued.
“And three weeks later, your mother’s car was forced off the road.”
Emily’s eyes opened.
“What?”
Richard stood.
“Anna died of cancer.”
Michael looked at him.
“She survived the crash.”
Emily stopped breathing.
May you like
Michael turned to her.
“But someone tried to kill her before the cancer did.”
