Chapter 15 - Anna’s Final PlanThomas survived.

The bullet had passed through his upper arm.

Emily visited him the next morning.

He looked smaller in the hospital bed.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“Everything.”

Emily sat beside him.

“Tell me why my mother wanted to destroy the inheritance.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Because it’s poisoned.”

“That sounds dramatic.”

“It’s accurate.”

He looked at her.

“The dormant Hale-Whitmore assets came from Charles’s criminal network.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“Illegal money.”

“Some.”

“What else?”

“Properties seized through fraud. Businesses forced into bankruptcy. Trusts taken from families who couldn’t fight back.”

Emily stared.

“So if I claim everything…”

“You inherit the legal rights.”

“But also the victims.”

Thomas nodded.

“Your mother didn’t want you rich from other people’s suffering.”

Emily looked down.

That sounded exactly like Anna.

“What did she plan?”

“To separate legitimate Whitmore assets from the criminal holdings.”

“Can that be done?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“You already have the documents.”

“The microfilm.”

“Yes.”

Emily leaned forward.

“My mother found all of this six months ago?”

“She found most of it.”

“And you helped.”

“I owed Eleanor.”

Emily was quiet.

Thomas continued.

“Anna’s goal was not to take Whitmore.”

“What was it?”

“To expose Charles publicly.”

Emily thought of Richard.

“He wants to clean the company too.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

“Maybe.”

“You don’t trust him?”

“I trust guilt less than principles.”

Emily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Richard wants redemption.”

“That’s bad?”

“It can be dangerous.”

Thomas looked toward the window.

“He may protect the company to preserve the idea that he fixed his father’s sins.”

Emily understood.

“And my mother wanted everything exposed.”

“Yes.”

“Even if it destroyed Whitmore Holdings.”

“Yes.”

The door opened.

Richard stood there.

He had heard enough.

Emily looked at him.

“Would you?”

He didn’t pretend not to understand.

“Would I destroy the company?”

“Yes.”

Richard entered.

“If that is what justice requires.”

Thomas laughed weakly.

“You say that now.”

Richard looked at him.

“You helped my father.”

Thomas nodded.

“I did.”

“You helped Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped Eleanor escape.”

Thomas’s eyes filled.

“Too late.”

Richard looked away.

Emily watched both men.

Old guilt filled the room.

She stood.

“I’m not interested in either of you paying for your past by controlling my future.”

Richard nodded.

“That’s fair.”

Emily looked at Thomas.

“Where are the rest of my mother’s records?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She gave them to Michael.”

Emily froze.

“Michael?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“A week before she died.”

Emily frowned.

“He didn’t tell me.”

Thomas looked surprised.

“He should have.”

Emily left the hospital immediately.

Michael was at the castle library.

She walked in and closed the door.

“Where are they?”

He looked up.

“What?”

“My mother’s records.”

Silence.

That was enough.

Emily’s jaw tightened.

“You have them.”

Michael stood.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“When you were ready.”

She laughed.

“Everyone keeps deciding when I’m ready.”

“Emily—”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You said my mother trusted you.”

“She did.”

“Then why are you hiding her work?”

Michael’s face hardened.

“Because Anna was wrong.”

Emily stopped.

“About what?”

“Destroying Whitmore.”

“You want the money.”

“I want the leverage.”

“Against whom?”

Michael looked at the closed library door.

“Governments.”

Emily stared.

“What?”

“The records connect Charles to people who are still alive.”

Her pulse jumped.

“Who?”

“Judges. Former ministers. Banking families.”

Emily felt cold.

Michael continued.

“If you release everything at once, powerful people will bury it.”

“So what do you want?”

“To negotiate.”

“With criminals?”

“With institutions.”

Emily shook her head.

“My mother wanted sunlight.”

“Your mother was dying.”

The cruelty of the sentence stunned both of them.

Michael immediately regretted it.

Emily stepped back.

“Give me the records.”

“No.”

“They belong to me.”

“They belong to the trust.”

“And I’m the beneficiary.”

“I’m the trustee.”

Emily stared.

There it was.

The real power.

Michael didn’t control the wealth.

But he controlled access.

Emily’s voice became quiet.

“You’re not protecting me.”

Michael said nothing.

“You’re controlling me.”

“Emily—”

She turned toward the door.

Then Michael said, “Anna knew this might happen.”

Emily stopped.

He opened a drawer.

Pulled out a sealed envelope.

Anna’s handwriting.

FOR EMILY — IF MICHAEL REFUSES.

Michael looked ashamed.

Emily took it.

Inside was one sentence.

If Michael will not give you the files, remove him as trustee.

Emily looked up.

Michael’s face went pale.

May you like

Because beneath the sentence was a signed legal order.

Already prepared.
