Chapter 17 - The Man Behind the SilenceSecurity moved toward Samuel.

He raised both hands calmly.

“No need.”

Richard stepped between him and Emily.

“Leave.”

Samuel smiled.

“You always did inherit Eleanor’s temper.”

Richard’s face darkened.

“What are you doing here?”

“Preventing a disaster.”

Emily stepped sideways.

“Which disaster?”

Samuel looked at her.

“You.”

She almost laughed.

“I’ve been called worse.”

“You don’t understand what releasing those records will cause.”

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence.”

Samuel’s expression remained calm.

“Charles wasn’t acting alone.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He stepped closer.

“You don’t.”

Richard grabbed his arm.

Samuel looked down at the hand.

“Careful.”

Security closed in.

Emily said, “Let him talk.”

Richard looked at her.

“Emily—”

“I want to hear him.”

Samuel adjusted his sleeve.

“Your great-grandfather built a network.”

“Of criminals.”

“Of powerful people.”

“Same thing sometimes.”

Samuel smiled faintly.

“You really are Eleanor’s granddaughter.”

Emily’s stomach tightened.

“You knew her.”

“Yes.”

“Did you help Charles find her?”

Samuel’s smile vanished.

Richard stared.

“That’s what this is about.”

Samuel looked at him.

“You still blame everyone except the dead.”

“Answer her.”

Samuel turned back to Emily.

“I was twenty-one.”

“So?”

“I drove for Charles.”

“Did you drive Daniel the night Eleanor disappeared?”

Silence.

Emily knew.

“You did.”

Samuel nodded.

Richard’s face went white.

“Where did you take him?”

“To the old railway crossing.”

Emily’s heart pounded.

“Where Eleanor was meeting Jonathan.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Samuel looked away for the first time.

“Daniel confronted her.”

“Did he hurt her?”

“He grabbed her.”

Emily flinched.

“Then Jonathan arrived.”

Richard whispered, “And?”

“They fought.”

Samuel’s voice became quieter.

“Daniel had a gun.”

Lady Margaret’s son.

Jonathan.

Emily stopped breathing.

“Did Daniel shoot him?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Samuel looked at Richard.

“Charles.”

Richard staggered.

“He was there?”

“Yes.”

Emily felt cold.

“Did Jonathan die?”

“Not that night.”

“Then what happened?”

“Eleanor threatened Charles.”

“With the evidence.”

“Yes.”

Samuel looked at Emily.

“She told him Anna would own everything he had stolen.”

“So Charles tried to kill her.”

“No.”

Emily frowned.

Samuel continued.

“He tried to take the baby.”

Emily’s skin crawled.

“Anna?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He believed if he controlled Anna, he controlled the trust.”

Richard whispered, “God.”

“Eleanor escaped.”

“How?”

Samuel looked toward the floor.

“Daniel let her go.”

Emily stared.

“Why?”

“Because he had just learned Charles wasn’t his father.”

The pieces connected.

Daniel’s journals.

His rage.

His loyalty breaking.

Samuel continued.

“He turned on Charles.”

“So Eleanor got away.”

“Yes.”

“What about Jonathan?”

“He survived.”

Emily froze.

“But Lady Margaret said he died in 1980.”

“He did.”

“Who killed him?”

Samuel looked at Richard.

Richard’s voice became deadly.

“My father.”

Samuel nodded.

Emily closed her eyes.

A generational war.

Murder.

Fraud.

Hidden children.

And all of it buried beneath a castle full of portraits.

Samuel continued.

“Charles died believing Anna was dead.”

Emily opened her eyes.

“Then why are you here?”

“Because the people who helped Charles did not die with him.”

Her pulse jumped.

Samuel reached into his coat.

Security raised weapons.

He slowly removed a folded document.

“I’m giving you a choice.”

Emily took it.

A list of names.

Some she recognized.

A former senator.

A banking executive.

A retired judge.

Three major families.

“What is this?”

“The people who will fight you.”

Emily looked up.

Samuel’s face was serious now.

“If you release everything, they will destroy Whitmore Holdings.”

“I don’t care about the castle.”

“They won’t stop at the company.”

Emily stared.

Samuel looked directly at her.

“They will come for you.”

Richard moved closer.

“You’re threatening her.”

“No.”

Samuel shook his head.

“I’m warning her.”

Emily looked at the list.

Then at Samuel.

“Why?”

For the first time, his composure broke.

“Because Eleanor saved my life.”

Silence.

Emily stared.

“When?”

“The night she escaped.”

Samuel swallowed.

“Charles ordered Daniel to kill me because I had seen too much.”

Richard looked stunned.

“Eleanor stopped him.”

Samuel’s eyes turned glassy.

“I’ve spent forty-seven years waiting for someone from her bloodline to come back.”

Emily looked down at the names.

“Then help me.”

Samuel’s face tightened.

“If I do, there is no going back.”

May you like

Emily folded the paper.

“There stopped being a way back when Victoria pushed my head into that fountain.”
