Chapter 19 - The Night the Castle BurnedSmoke rose above the east wing.

Emily saw it from the road.

“No.”

Richard drove faster.

Police vehicles were already ahead of them.

Flames glowed behind the upper windows.

The archive.

Emily’s stomach dropped.

“They’re destroying the records.”

Richard gripped the wheel.

“Copies exist.”

“Not everything.”

They reached the gate.

Fire crews rushed inside.

Samuel stood near the courtyard, blood on his forehead.

Emily ran toward him.

“What happened?”

“Three men.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Richard grabbed him.

“Did you bring them here?”

Samuel shoved him away.

“Get off me.”

Emily stepped between them.

“Where are the microfilms?”

Samuel looked toward the burning wing.

“Still inside.”

Emily started forward.

Richard grabbed her.

“No.”

“My mother’s evidence is in there.”

“You’re not going into a fire.”

“I’m not losing it.”

Samuel shouted, “There’s another copy!”

Emily turned.

“What?”

He coughed.

“Anna made one.”

“Where?”

Samuel looked at the fountain.

Emily froze.

“No.”

He nodded.

“Under it.”

Richard stared.

“We already found the bell clue.”

“That was the legal cache.”

Samuel pointed toward the damaged lotus fountain.

“The criminal evidence is beneath the basin.”

Emily ran.

Firefighters shouted as she crossed the courtyard.

Richard followed.

They reached the fountain.

Samuel knelt beside the base.

“There’s a drain seal.”

Emily found a metal plate beneath the waterline.

Richard used his cane to pry it loose.

Inside was a waterproof tube.

Emily pulled it out.

Heavy.

Sealed.

She opened it.

Microfilm.

Hard drives.

Letters.

Photographs.

Enough to expose decades.

Emily almost cried.

Her mother had done it.

She had protected everything.

A firefighter shouted from behind them.

“Move!”

Part of the east roof collapsed.

Everyone stumbled back.

The flames rose higher.

Richard looked at the burning windows.

“My father’s office.”

Emily looked at him.

“Let it burn.”

He stared.

Then slowly nodded.

Samuel sat on the fountain edge.

Emily turned to him.

“Did you cut my mother’s brake line?”

His face changed.

Richard stepped closer.

“Answer.”

Samuel looked at Emily.

“No.”

“Did you know who did?”

“Yes.”

Her pulse jumped.

“Who?”

He stared at the fire.

“Michael.”

Emily went still.

“No.”

Samuel nodded.

“Anna was removing him as future trustee.”

“That doesn’t make sense. She named him.”

“She planned to replace him.”

Emily thought of the prepared order.

If Michael refuses, remove him.

Samuel continued.

“Michael believed control of the trust was his only leverage against Whitmore.”

Richard swore.

Emily felt sick.

“Why would my mother still give him the files?”

“She didn’t know yet.”

“How do you know?”

“Thomas told me.”

Emily looked toward the police.

“Where is Michael?”

Richard checked his phone.

No answer.

Samuel said quietly, “He’s gone.”

Emily stared.

“You knew this and didn’t tell me.”

“I had no proof.”

“You had enough to warn me.”

“I thought he would run.”

Emily’s anger rose.

“You keep deciding what I need to know.”

Samuel lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

Police approached.

Samuel handed them his phone.

“Everything I have is there.”

Emily looked at the burning castle.

For generations, people had protected secrets by deciding someone else wasn’t ready for the truth.

Eleanor.

Anna.

Richard.

Victoria.

Thomas.

Michael.

Samuel.

All of them had hidden something.

Emily looked at the evidence tube in her hands.

“No more.”

Richard heard her.

“What?”

She turned.

“I’m releasing everything.”

Samuel’s expression tightened.

“Emily—”

“Everything.”

“Some innocent people—”

“Then their names will be protected.”

“The company—”

“Can survive truth or die from lies.”

Richard watched her.

Then he nodded.

“I’m with you.”

Emily looked at him.

“Don’t be with me.”

He frowned.

“Be accountable.”

Richard slowly lowered his head.

“Yes.”

Behind them, the upper floor of Whitmore Castle collapsed in a shower of sparks.

And for the first time in forty-seven years, no one tried to save the room where Charles Whitmore had built his empire.
