Then Bernice hugged.

Leah helped:

“Promises made under fear can be broken.”

Wren:

“Even to Grandma?”

“Yes.”

Mallory:

“You can always tell me if someone asks secret about money, bodies, safety, home.”

Careful not broad secret panic. Good child safety.

Wren asked:

“What about surprise gifts?”

Mallory:

“Short surprises are different.”

“If secret makes stomach hurt, tell.”

“You don't have to be little adult.”

Wren cried:

They begin chores with fairness:

Wren loads dishwasher some nights.

But no service while adults lounge.

Elsie carries napkins.
