Chapter 18 - BERNICE FINALLY TELLS THE TRUTHSentencing/plea? Before, mediated conversation.

Bernice accepts responsibility.
She says:
“I hated that Caleb died and you kept everything that looked like his life.”
Mallory stunned.
“You think I kept?”
“He was my husband.”
“You didn't lose alone.”
Bernice:
“I lost son.”
“You could someday love someone else.”
“I couldn’t have another Caleb.”
This is raw.
Mallory:
“That does not make my grief temporary.”
“And even if I love again, Caleb is still father.”
Bernice admits envy:
Mallory had house, girls, daily remnants.
Bernice returned empty home.
Then debt.
She told herself taking control restored something.
Mallory line:
“Caleb married me. He didn’t hire me to hold his life until you wanted it back.”
Bernice cries.
She admits birthday cruelty:
She resented Wren acting like “Mallory’s child” rather than “Barrett child”? Too dark. Better she genuinely believed children should serve adults due upbringing, and when Wren resisted she doubled down because she was anxious about document plan.
“I was angry you weren't home on schedule.”
Why? She needed sign.
So she took anger out on girls by making order strict.
She acknowledges.
Mallory:
“You used my daughters to prepare yourself for controlling me.”
Bernice:
“Yes.”
No excuse.
She pleads guilty later to a reduced but meaningful offense involving attempted fraudulent property filing and receives probation, substantial restitution/legal fees, community service, financial monitoring? Courts may not impose financial monitoring beyond restitution. Fine.
No prison due no prior record, no successful transfer, cooperation. This could anger audience wanting justice but is realistic. She loses business standing and assets due debt.
Mallory doesn't campaign for prison.

She writes victim statement focusing impact.
