Chapter 10 - FOURTEEN MONTHS OF BECOMING A SERVANTMarianne had not realized the first time she served Brenna’s guests was important.

It was just a tray.

Six people.

Brenna had booked a caterer, but one employee called sick.

Marianne said:

“I can help.”

She carried appetizers.

Guests complimented house.

Marianne enjoyed telling history.

Thomas renovated sunroom himself.

Adriana chose blue wallpaper as teenager.

Gavin broke banister sliding down.

Brenna laughed.

That night felt warm.

Two weeks later another event.

Brenna asked:

“Would you mind doing coffee?”

Marianne agreed.

Then:

“Could you stay kitchen until presentation ends?”

Why?

“Clients get distracted.”

Marianne felt slight but said fine.

By fourth event, Brenna no longer asked.

“There are glasses in dishwasher.”

“Can you handle?”

Marianne did.

Gavin said nothing.

By sixth month, roles hardened.

Brenna started correcting mother-in-law in front of guests.

“Marianne, not those napkins.”

“Please don’t tell childhood stories.”

“Could you change cardigan? It clashes with table.”

Marianne laughed off.

Then Brenna moved family photographs from living room.

“Too personal for client space.”

“This is personal home,” Marianne said.

“Also business environment now.”

Gavin:

“It’s temporary.”

Temporary again.

The first truly humiliating moment happened nine months in.

Marianne joined a dinner in navy dress.

Brenna pulled aside.

“I thought we discussed.”

“What?”

“Tonight is industry people.”

“I live here.”

“I know.”

“But maybe eat upstairs?”

Marianne stared.

“Why?”

Brenna sighed.

“Because you interrupt conversations and people feel obligated to entertain you.”

Marianne went upstairs.

She told herself she preferred television.

Gavin brought plate twenty minutes later.

He did not challenge.

Marianne thanked him.

That thank-you haunted later.

She was grateful son delivered food in house where she had been excluded from dinner.

The next stage was financial.

After knee procedure, Brenna offered handle online bills.

Marianne agreed.

Brenna created spreadsheet.

At first helpful.

Then began classifying party expenses as “household.”

Flowers.

Deep cleaning.

Linens.

Utilities increases.

Marianne questioned one $900 charge.

Brenna said:

“Those were landscaping repairs that keep value of house you live in.”

Marianne paid.

She believed perhaps fair.

Then transfers to business.

Brenna claimed reimbursements for costs she fronted.

Some legitimate.

Some not.

Gavin avoided.

When Marianne said:

“I feel like I’m paying to work.”

He laughed nervously.

“Mom, don’t put like.”

Why?

Because wording exposed.

Brenna’s cruelty also became social.

She stopped introducing Marianne as mother-in-law.

Instead:

“Marianne stays with us.”

A lie.

Subtle.

Guests assumed Brenna owned.

Marianne heard.

Did not correct.

Because correcting would embarrass Gavin.

The night Adriana returned was worst.

Brenna had invited investors to discuss expanding her event brand into private-home experiences.

Wyndham Grove was centerpiece.

Marianne had asked to attend.

Brenna said:

“You can help.”

Help meant clean.

When sauce spilled, Brenna insisted Marianne wipe immediately rather than staff because “she caused.”

Then Adriana walked in.

Marianne’s shame doubled.

Not because daughter saw mistreatment.

Because she believed she had failed to keep family peaceful.

Therapy helped untangle.

Marianne said:

“I kept thinking if I was nicer, Brenna would relax.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

“If you worked harder?”

“She found more.”

“If you stayed invisible?”

“She said I sulked.”

No perfect behavior can satisfy controlling dynamic because goal is not behavior.

It is authority.

Marianne began reclaiming routines.

She invited old friend Ruth to lunch.

First time in months.

They sat dining room.

Marianne initially stood to clear immediately.

Ruth said:

“Sit.”

Marianne froze.

Then laughed.

“Brenna always—”

She stopped.

Brenna no longer there.

Marianne sat.

That was healing.

Adriana intentionally did not replace Brenna as household commander.

She asked:

“Want me to stay here?”

Marianne said:

“Not permanently.”

Adriana surprised.

“You don’t?”

“I love you.”

“But I need learn house mine to live in even when nobody protecting.”

Excellent.

Adriana rented nearby apartment for three months while case unfolded.

She visited, did not move in.

This was crucial.

Rescue can become new control.

Marianne hired part-time housekeeper from own budget? Actually Adriana offered pay, Marianne chose cost-sharing. They agreed Adriana pays structural owner tasks, Marianne chooses domestic help using her income plus voluntary family gift. Agency contract directly with Marianne.

No family member commands.

Gavin remained temporary guest only with conditions.

He began cooking.

One night Marianne entered kitchen and instinctively reached to clean.

Gavin said:

“I’ve got.”

She looked suspicious.

“Because guilt?”

“Yes.”

“At least honest.”

They laughed weakly.

But dishes were place to begin.
