Chapter 19 - MARIANNE SAYS NOThe most important scene did not involve court.

“I found apartment but lease starts six weeks.”
Marianne looked.
“I want you out in two.”
Gavin froze.
“Mom.”

“Where do I go?”
“Extended stay.”

Gavin’s face collapsed.

“I keep taking care of you because you’re sad.”

“I ask lawyer.”
“I worry about your rent.”
“And then I realize I am doing it again.”
“Doing what?”
“Making myself useful so you won’t leave.”
Gavin cried.
“Mom.”
“No.”
She shook.
“You need to leave because I need to learn that you can leave and still be my son.”
That was core.
Not punishment.
Boundary.
Adriana sat quietly.
Gavin looked at sister.
“Are you making her?”
Marianne’s expression sharpened.
“No.”
“Do not do that.”
“This is mine.”
He apologized.
Two weeks later, Gavin moved.
Adriana gave no money.
Marianne gave no money.
He managed.
He still visited Sunday by invitation.
At first awkward.
