CHAPTER 1
The Woman Who Could Only Cry

Every afternoon at exactly two o'clock...

The dining room inside the Hayes mansion became completely silent.

Not because the family gathered there.

But because only one person remained.

Eleanor Hayes.

Seventy-eight years old.

Once the powerful matriarch of one of Beverly Hills' wealthiest families.

Now...

Confined to a wheelchair after a devastating stroke.

She could no longer speak.

She couldn't write.

She couldn't even move her right arm.

The doctors called it a miracle that she was still alive.

Eleanor didn't feel lucky.

She felt trapped.

Every day she watched people make decisions around her.

People spoke as though she no longer understood anything.

But she understood everything.

Every word.

Every lie.

Every secret whispered just outside her bedroom door.

The only thing she had lost...

Was the ability to tell anyone.

At exactly 2:05 p.m., Anna Carter entered the dining room carrying a tray.

A bowl of steaming porridge.

A glass of warm water.

Medication.

The same routine.

Every single day.

Anna had worked for the Hayes family for nearly fifteen years.

She loved Eleanor like her own mother.

She had once spent entire nights beside Eleanor's hospital bed after the stroke.

She knew exactly how gently Eleanor needed to be fed.

Slowly.

One spoonful at a time.

Giving her enough time to swallow.

That had always been the doctor's instructions.

But today...

Everything was different.

Anna stood motionless beside the wheelchair.

Inside the pocket of her uniform...

Her phone vibrated.

She didn't need to read the message.

She already knew who had sent it.

The same number had texted her every afternoon for the past week.

Only one instruction.

"Faster."

Anna closed her eyes.

Then picked up the spoon.

"I'm sorry..." she whispered so quietly that only Eleanor could hear.

The first spoonful came too quickly.

The hot porridge pressed hard against Eleanor's lips.

The elderly woman winced in pain.

A tear rolled slowly down her cheek.

Anna's own eyes filled with tears.

She hated herself.

But she kept going.

Another spoonful.

Then another.

Eleanor tried to turn her head away.

She couldn't.

Anna gently whispered,

"Please forgive me."

Eleanor looked directly into Anna's eyes.

There was no anger there.

Only confusion.

Why?

Why was the woman who had cared for her so faithfully suddenly treating her this way?

Anna's hands trembled so violently that porridge spilled onto the white tablecloth.

She wanted to stop.

She almost did.

Then her phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Only three words.

"We're watching you."

Anna froze.

She slowly looked toward the large dining room windows.

No one.

Only the perfectly trimmed gardens beyond the glass.

But she knew.

Someone was watching.

She forced herself to lift another spoon.

Just then...

The dining room doors flew open.

Emily Hayes rushed inside carrying a folder of medical reports.

She stopped dead in her tracks.

The bowl.

The tears running down Eleanor's face.

The spoon being pushed forcefully toward her mouth.

Emily couldn't believe what she was seeing.

For months she had trusted Anna completely.

She had believed Eleanor was receiving the best care possible.

Now...

Everything looked like abuse.

Without thinking...

Emily ran forward.

The slap echoed through the marble dining room.

The spoon flew from Anna's hand and clattered across the floor.

"How dare you treat my mother like that?"

Anna staggered backward.

One hand pressed against her burning cheek.

She didn't defend herself.

She didn't even cry because of the slap.

She looked only at Eleanor.

"I'm sorry..."

Emily stepped protectively in front of the wheelchair.

"You don't have to apologize to her."

"You should apologize to my mother."

Anna slowly shook her head.

Tears streamed freely now.

"I..."

"I didn't have a choice."

Emily's voice hardened.

"What do you mean?"

Anna looked toward the hallway.

Her lips trembled.

Then she whispered the sentence that would shatter the Hayes family.

"Mrs. Margaret told me to do it..."

Emily froze.

The room became deathly quiet.

Before she could ask another question...

A pair of elegant high heels clicked slowly across the marble floor outside the dining room.

Someone...

Was approaching.
