CHAPTER 5
The Evidence William Hid Inside the Clock

Emily carefully placed the sealed envelope on the dining table.

No one reached for it.

For years...

It had remained hidden inside the grandfather clock.

Protected by William Hayes.

Waiting for exactly this moment.

Margaret whispered,

"I thought he destroyed everything."

Emily looked at her.

"You knew about this?"

Margaret slowly nodded.

"Not the envelope."

"But William told me once..."

'If anything happens to me, the truth will stay inside the house.'

She had never understood what he meant.

Until now.

Emily carefully broke the seal.

Inside...

There wasn't just one document.

There were several.

A USB flash drive.

Three medical reports.

A folded pharmacy receipt.

And...

A handwritten letter.

Emily unfolded the letter first.

William's handwriting filled the page.

"If Collins has returned, then Eleanor is in danger again."

Anna gasped.

Emily continued reading.

"The medicine Collins gave Eleanor was never designed to help stroke patients."

"It was an experimental neurological drug withdrawn after several patients suffered severe brain damage."

Margaret burst into tears.

"I trusted him..."

Emily gently squeezed her hand.

"I know."

William's letter continued.

"Collins convinced Margaret the medication would slow Eleanor's memory loss."

"She never knew the truth."

Anna slowly looked at Margaret.

"So..."

"You didn't poison Mrs. Eleanor?"

Margaret shook her head desperately.

"Never."

"I believed I was helping her."

For the first time...

Anna believed her.

Emily picked up the pharmacy receipt.

The medication had been purchased under a false clinical trial number.

The prescribing physician's signature...

Was forged.

Then she examined the medical reports.

Each one carried a different diagnosis.

One claimed Eleanor suffered Alzheimer's disease.

Another diagnosed vascular dementia.

The third...

Showed no neurological disease at all.

Emily frowned.

"Three completely different reports?"

Margaret whispered,

"William ordered independent examinations."

"He no longer trusted Collins."

Emily opened the final document.

It was a laboratory toxicology report.

Her eyes widened.

"Grandma..."

"...had traces of a sedative."

Anna froze.

"What?"

Emily read the report again.

"The sedative wasn't prescribed."

"It was found in her bloodstream..."

"...two weeks before the stroke."

The room fell silent.

Eleanor began crying again.

Not because she was frightened.

Because someone...

Finally believed her.

Only one item remained inside the envelope.

The USB flash drive.

Emily plugged it into her laptop.

One video file appeared.

Recorded eight years earlier.

She clicked Play.

William Hayes sat inside his private study.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I failed to protect Eleanor."

His voice trembled.

"David Collins isn't working alone."

Emily looked toward Margaret.

William continued.

"Someone inside this family introduced him to us."

Silence.

Anna frowned.

"But who?"

William answered almost immediately.

"Not Margaret."

Margaret broke down completely.

Years of guilt poured out in tears.

William continued.

"She trusted the wrong person."

Then he slowly lifted a photograph toward the camera.

Emily enlarged the image on her laptop.

Everyone leaned closer.

It showed Collins shaking hands with a man outside the Hayes mansion.

The photograph wasn't very clear.

But one detail stood out immediately.

The man wore the official blazer of Hayes Family Private Trust.

Margaret whispered,

"The trustee..."

Emily nodded.

"Uncle Charles."

Margaret's older brother.

The man who had managed Eleanor's fortune for almost twenty years.

Anna covered her mouth.

"He introduced Collins?"

Margaret slowly nodded.

"He said Collins was one of the country's best specialists."

William's final words filled the room.

"Don't waste time blaming Margaret."

"Find the man who brought Collins into our lives."

The video ended.

The screen went black.

No one spoke.

For several minutes...

Only the ticking of the grandfather clock echoed through the mansion.

Eleanor slowly reached for Margaret's hand.

Margaret knelt beside the wheelchair.

"I'm so sorry..."

Tears streamed down both women's faces.

Eleanor gently squeezed her daughter's hand.

She had waited eight long years for that moment.

Not for revenge.

Not for justice.

Only...

To be believed.

Just then, Emily's phone rang.

An unknown number.

She answered cautiously.

A calm male voice spoke only one sentence.

"If you've opened William's envelope..."

"...you're already too late."

The line disconnected.

Emily stared at the phone.

Richard—sorry, there was no Richard in this story.

Margaret slowly looked toward the window.

A black luxury sedan was pulling away from the mansion.

Someone had been watching the house.

Again.

And whoever it was...

Already knew the hidden evidence had been found.
