CHAPTER 3
The Secret Behind the Portrait

Margaret's voice echoed through the dining room.

"No!"

It wasn't loud.

But it was enough.

Enough for Emily to stop.

Enough for Anna to realize something extraordinary was hidden behind that portrait.

And enough for Eleanor to close her eyes in relief.

For the first time since her stroke...

Someone had finally noticed what she had been trying to say.

Emily slowly turned toward Margaret.

"You knew."

Margaret immediately regained her composure.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Emily looked back at the portrait.

It had swung open only a few inches before stopping.

Behind it...

A narrow steel compartment had been built into the wall.

Almost invisible.

Anna whispered,

"I've cleaned this room for fifteen years..."

"I never knew it was there."

Margaret walked forward.

Calm.

Measured.

"I had it installed after a burglary years ago."

She reached toward the portrait.

"I'll close it."

Emily stepped between her and the wall.

"No."

Margaret stopped.

The two women stared at each other.

For the first time...

Neither was pretending anymore.

Emily spoke quietly.

"If there's nothing important inside..."

"...why were you so frightened when it opened?"

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead...

She smiled.

A controlled smile.

"You've always had a vivid imagination."

Emily ignored her.

She gently pulled the portrait farther away from the wall.

The hidden compartment was surprisingly small.

Inside...

There wasn't jewelry.

There wasn't cash.

Only a thin leather folder.

A small digital voice recorder.

And an old silver key.

Emily carefully removed the folder.

Across the front...

Only three handwritten words appeared.

For Eleanor Only

Margaret's breathing became noticeably heavier.

"Emily."

"Put that back."

Emily slowly looked up.

"No."

"You've had six months to tell us the truth."

"I'm done waiting."

She opened the folder.

Inside...

Were dozens of handwritten pages.

The handwriting belonged unmistakably to Eleanor.

Written months before her stroke.

The first page read:

"If you're reading this... it means I can no longer speak for myself."

The room fell silent.

Emily continued reading aloud.

"Never believe everything Margaret tells you."

Anna covered her mouth.

Margaret's face remained expressionless.

Only her hands betrayed her.

They had begun trembling.

Emily turned another page.

It described changes inside the household.

Money disappearing.

Documents being moved.

Employees suddenly resigning without explanation.

Then...

One paragraph caught everyone's attention.

"Someone has been giving me medication I was never prescribed."

Emily stopped reading.

She looked at Margaret.

"What medication?"

Margaret answered immediately.

"I have no idea."

But Anna did.

Three months earlier...

Margaret had personally instructed her to replace Eleanor's evening medicine with capsules from an unlabeled bottle.

When Anna questioned it...

Margaret had said,

"The doctor changed her prescription."

Anna had believed her.

Until now.

Emily slowly turned another page.

Near the bottom...

Eleanor had written one final warning.

"If my condition suddenly becomes worse..."

"...it wasn't natural."

The room became ice cold.

Emily looked toward her grandmother.

Tears streamed down Eleanor's face.

She blinked repeatedly.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

As though begging Emily to keep reading.

Then Emily noticed something tucked inside the back cover.

A folded photograph.

She carefully unfolded it.

It showed Margaret standing inside a private pharmacy late at night.

She wasn't alone.

Across the counter stood a man in a white medical coat.

They appeared to be exchanging a small white bottle.

There was a timestamp.

Three days...

Before Eleanor's stroke.

Emily stared at the photograph.

Her heart pounded.

Margaret stepped forward for the first time.

"Give me that."

Emily took one step back.

"No."

Margaret's calm mask finally cracked.

"You don't understand what you're looking at."

Anna whispered,

"Mrs. Margaret..."

"Did you poison her?"

"No!"

Margaret shouted.

The force of her voice startled everyone.

Even Eleanor flinched.

Margaret realized she had lost control.

She closed her eyes.

Took a slow breath.

Then quietly said,

"I never wanted Eleanor to suffer."

Emily frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Margaret looked at Eleanor.

For the first time...

There were tears in her own eyes.

"I was trying..."

"...to protect this family."

Nobody understood.

Not Emily.

Not Anna.

Not even Eleanor.

Then the old voice recorder inside the compartment suddenly slipped from the folder and hit the marble floor.

The impact pressed the Play button.

Static filled the room.

Then...

A man's voice echoed through the dining room.

A voice everyone recognized instantly.

It belonged to Eleanor's late husband, William Hayes.

"Margaret... if anyone ever hears this recording..."

The tape crackled.

Then came the sentence that made every person in the room freeze.

"...tell them the stroke wasn't the beginning."

"It was only the second attempt."

Emily slowly turned toward Margaret.

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"Second attempt..."

"...at what?"
