CHAPTER 2

CHAPTER 2
Margaret's Perfect Lie
The sound of high heels echoed through the marble hallway.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Anna's breathing became shallow.
She didn't need to turn around.
She already knew who was coming.
Margaret Hayes entered the dining room exactly as she always did.
Elegant.
Composed.
Perfectly dressed in a navy-blue designer dress with a pearl necklace resting gracefully around her neck.
Nothing about her appearance suggested panic.
Nothing suggested guilt.
She glanced first at Eleanor.
Then at the bowl of porridge on the floor.
Finally...
At Anna's reddened cheek.
Margaret frowned.
"What happened here?"
Emily pointed angrily at Anna.
"I caught her forcing hot porridge into Mom's mouth!"
Margaret's eyes widened just enough to appear surprised.
Then she slowly looked at Anna.
"Is that true?"
Anna nodded through tears.
"...Yes."
Emily stepped closer.
"And she just admitted you ordered her to do it."
The room fell silent.
Margaret looked directly into Anna's eyes.
For a brief second...
Neither woman spoke.
Then Margaret quietly laughed.
Not loudly.
Just enough to sound disappointed.
"Anna..."
"I've treated you like family for fifteen years."
"Why would you tell such a terrible lie?"
Anna stared at her in disbelief.
"L... lie?"
Margaret slowly walked toward Eleanor's wheelchair.
She gently wiped away the elderly woman's tears with a silk handkerchief.
Her movements were slow.
Tender.
Exactly what everyone expected from a devoted daughter.
Then she looked at Emily.
"Your mother has difficulty swallowing."
"The speech therapist specifically instructed Anna to encourage her to eat."
Emily frowned.
"Encourage?"
Margaret nodded calmly.
"If she doesn't finish her meals..."
"...she becomes weaker."
She turned toward Anna.
"I told you to be patient."
"Not rough."
Anna's face went pale.
"No..."
"That's not what you said."
Margaret sighed softly.
"I think you're frightened because Emily slapped you."
Emily glanced uneasily between the two women.
Something wasn't right.
Anna wasn't acting like someone inventing excuses.
She looked...
Terrified.
Margaret slowly reached into her handbag.
She removed several folded medical documents.
Without hesitation, she handed them to Emily.
"The doctor's instructions."
Emily quickly scanned the pages.
Everything appeared legitimate.
Daily nutrition schedule.
Swallowing therapy recommendations.
Medication times.
Margaret spoke gently.
"You see?"
"I've only ever wanted what's best for your mother."
Emily lowered the papers.
Her anger began fading.
Had she misunderstood everything?
Anna watched helplessly.
She knew those papers were real.
But they weren't the papers Margaret had shown her yesterday.
Yesterday...
Margaret had handed her a completely different sheet.
Only one sentence had been highlighted.
"Finish every meal within fifteen minutes."
Anna had questioned it.
Margaret had replied coldly,
"Do exactly as you're told."
Now...
That document had vanished.
As if it had never existed.
Anna whispered,
"You changed the papers..."
Margaret's expression didn't move.
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
Emily looked exhausted.
She wanted to believe Anna.
But the documents in her hands supported Margaret's explanation.
Anna suddenly realized something horrifying.
Someone had prepared for this confrontation.
Long before today.
Long before Emily walked into the dining room.
Everything had been anticipated.
Everything...
Except Eleanor.
The elderly woman had been watching silently the entire time.
Tears continued running down her cheeks.
Her left hand trembled violently against the armrest of her wheelchair.
Very slowly...
Painfully...
She forced one finger into the air.
Emily noticed the movement.
"Grandma..."
She rushed to Eleanor's side.
"What is it?"
Eleanor struggled desperately.
Her finger wasn't pointing at Anna.
It wasn't pointing at the bowl of porridge.
It was pointing...
Toward the framed family portrait hanging on the opposite wall.
Emily looked confused.
"The picture?"
Margaret's calm expression changed...
For the first time.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But Anna saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
Before Emily could reach the portrait...
Margaret spoke sharply.
"Emily."
"Your mother is tired."
"You're imagining things."
But Eleanor kept pointing.
Again.
And again.
Her trembling finger never moved away from the portrait.
Then...
A single tear rolled down her face.
And something unexpected happened.
The bottom corner of the large family portrait...
Slowly swung outward.
Just a few inches.
As though it hadn't been properly closed.
Behind it...
A narrow black gap appeared in the wall.
Emily stared at it.
"A... hidden compartment?"
Margaret took one involuntary step forward.
"No!"
The word escaped her mouth before she could stop it.
The room fell completely silent.
For the first time...
Margaret Hayes no longer looked like the woman in control.
