Chapter 15 - The PartnerDaniel had trusted Lisa for six years.

She knew his coffee order.
His mother’s birthday.
The scar on his shoulder.
She had covered him during shootings.
Sat beside him after fatal child-abuse cases.
She had been the first officer to bring Evan a blanket.
Now she had taken him.
Daniel stood completely still.
Marcus was already tracing the phone.
Michael whispered, “I warned you.”
Daniel turned.
“You knew for two years?”
“I suspected.”
“And you didn’t tell me?”
“I had no proof.”
Daniel grabbed him.
“That boy is gone because every person in this room thought secrecy was protection!”
Michael didn’t fight back.
Marcus shouted.
“Daniel!”
He released his brother.
Marcus pointed to a map.
“Phone hit near downtown.”
“Where?”
“Parking garage.”
They moved.
State police.
Federal agents.
No local department units.
Daniel entered the garage first.
Lisa stood beside her car.
Evan sat in the passenger seat.
Unhurt.
Daniel aimed.
“Step away.”
Lisa raised both hands.
“I’m not Northstar.”
Daniel laughed.
“Then this is a terrible way to prove it.”
“I took him because Hayes still has people in the department.”
“You could have told me.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Michael’s recording.”
Daniel froze.
Lisa continued.
“Sarah thought I worked for Northstar because I was investigating them.”
Daniel frowned.
“You?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“My father was Steven Pike.”
Silence.
The contractor David Mercer had been framed for murdering.
Daniel stared.
Lisa’s eyes filled.
“Northstar killed my father.”
Ryan, standing behind the federal agents, went pale.
His brother had died in prison for murdering Lisa’s father.
Two children from opposite sides of the same fabricated crime.
Both destroyed by the same lie.
Lisa continued.
“I joined the department because Keller was there.”
Keller lowered his head.
“I thought he killed my father.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew about David?”
“I learned he was innocent three years ago.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“You knew?”
Lisa looked at him.
“I was trying to prove it.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“You were off the grid.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“So was everyone.”
Evan opened the car door.
Daniel lowered his weapon.
“Come here.”
The boy ran to him.
Daniel held him.
The first time.
Not carefully.
Not like a witness.
Like his son.
Evan buried his face against Daniel’s uniform.
Lisa watched.
“I’m sorry.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You do that again, I arrest you myself.”
“Fair.”
Michael approached.
Lisa’s expression hardened.
“You.”
Michael nodded.
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She stepped closer.
“My father died because of what you did.”
Michael didn’t defend himself.
“I know.”
“And David died.”
“Yes.”
“And Sarah lost eight years with her son.”
“Yes.”
Lisa’s voice shook.
“How many lives were you going to fix by hiding?”
Michael looked at Evan.
“All of them.”
“You fixed none.”
“No.”
The truth hung there.
Marcus walked over with a laptop.
“We’ve got something.”
He opened a recovered Northstar archive.
A set of recent surveillance images.
Daniel.
Evan.
Michael’s cabin.
Lisa.
Ryan.
Then Sarah.
Daniel froze.
The photograph was timestamped six days earlier.
Sarah was alive.
And nearby.
“Where was this taken?”
Marcus zoomed in.
A motel.
Two counties south.
Daniel looked at Evan.
“Your mom.”
The boy stared at the screen.
He had never seen her except in photographs.
“She’s alive.”
Daniel nodded.
Maybe.
The image was six days old.
They searched the motel.
Sarah had checked out the morning Evan escaped Ryan.
She left no forwarding address.
But motel security showed her meeting someone.
Dr. Evelyn Shaw.
Then another person.
Daniel leaned toward the footage.
“Who is that?”
Michael’s face changed.
“No.”
Ryan looked too.
He recognized him.
A gray-haired man in an expensive suit.
Marcus ran facial identification.
The screen displayed a name.
WILLIAM MERCER.
Ryan sat down.
Daniel looked at him.
“Your father?”
Ryan’s face had lost all color.
“My father died fifteen years ago.”
Michael whispered, “Apparently not.”
Ryan stared at the footage.
William Mercer.
Father of David and Ryan.
Grandfather Evan had been told never existed.
The man hugged Sarah.
Then handed her a folder.
Daniel looked at Ryan.
“Why would your father fake his death?”
Ryan could barely speak.
“He worked for Northstar before David did.”
Michael looked at him.
“What position?”
Ryan swallowed.
“Founder.”
Silence.
Daniel felt the entire case shift again.
David Mercer had not accidentally joined Northstar.
He had inherited it.
Ryan’s family wasn’t only a victim of the organization.
It had helped create it.
And somewhere nearby, the supposedly dead founder was meeting Sarah.
Michael stared at the screen.
“If William is alive…”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
Michael’s face turned grim.
“Then Hayes was never running Northstar.”
May you like
Ryan whispered the answer.
“My father was.”
