Chapter 17 - Rachel MercerRachel Mercer had not died.

The overdose had been staged.
Keller had helped.
That was why his payments stopped seven years ago.
He hadn’t merely felt guilty after meeting her.
He had helped her disappear.
Daniel stared at Keller across the interrogation table.
“You let Ryan believe his niece was dead.”
Keller’s eyes filled.
“It was the only way to keep her alive.”
Ryan sat beside Daniel.
His face was rigid.
“You should have told me.”
“You were hunting Michael.”
“I was her uncle.”
“You were angry enough to burn everything.”
Ryan stood.
Keller didn’t deny it.
“Where is she?”
Keller looked toward the federal agent.
“Protection?”
“Yes.”
“Real protection?”
Daniel answered.
“Yes.”
Keller gave them an address.
Rachel was twenty-three now.
She worked under another name at a veterinary clinic two states away.
When Ryan saw her, he stopped walking.
Rachel stared at him.
Then slapped him.
Hard.
“You took Evan.”
Ryan lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“You idiot.”
“Yes.”
Then she hugged him.
He broke.
Daniel looked away.
Some reunions did not belong to witnesses.
Rachel knew about William’s dead-man system.
David had told her before his arrest that if anything happened, she should never trust their grandfather.
“Dad knew William was framing him.”
She looked at Daniel.
“He also knew somebody in the police department was helping.”
“Keller.”
“And Hayes.”
Rachel nodded.
She agreed to provide the DNA key.
But only under one condition.
“All records proving my father was innocent are released first.”
Daniel looked at Ryan.
Ryan’s eyes filled.
“Deal.”
Michael stood silently.
Rachel turned toward him.
Her expression became ice.
“You.”
Michael didn’t move.
“You helped destroy my father.”
“Yes.”
“You raised Evan.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Michael looked toward the floor.
“Because I loved him.”
Rachel’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t erase anything.”
“I know.”
She studied him.
Then asked:
“Did you love my father?”
Michael looked surprised.
Rachel continued.
“You worked together before all this.”
Michael nodded slowly.
“He was my friend.”
Ryan stared.
Michael’s eyes filled.
“He found the first evidence against Northstar.”
“Then why betray him?”
“Hayes threatened Daniel.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
Michael continued.
“I told myself I was choosing my brother.”
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“You chose who would suffer.”
Michael flinched.
“Yes.”
“And you picked my dad.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Rachel nodded.
“At least you finally say it.”
They returned to the federal operations center.
Rachel’s DNA key worked.
The archive separated.
The dead-man system shut down.
William Mercer was arrested.
Chief Hayes was charged.
Keller agreed to testify.
Dr. Shaw cooperated.
Ryan faced kidnapping and weapons charges but also became a major witness against Northstar.
Then came David.
His conviction was formally reviewed.
The fabricated evidence surfaced.
The witness had been paid.
The DNA record altered.
Security footage manufactured.
After fourteen years, the state vacated David Mercer’s murder conviction.
Ryan stood outside the courthouse holding the order.
He didn’t celebrate.
“My brother should be here.”
Rachel squeezed his hand.
“He is.”
Daniel watched from several feet away.
Evan stood beside him.
A DNA test had returned the previous morning.
99.999%.
Daniel Reed was Evan’s biological father.
Daniel had stared at the paper for nearly an hour.
Now Evan looked up.
“So what do I call you?”
Daniel crouched.
“Whatever you want.”
“Dad?”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“If you want.”
Evan nodded.
Then looked at Michael.
Michael stood alone near the courthouse steps.
The boy’s expression changed.
“Can I still call him Dad too?”
Daniel looked at his brother.
Every instinct in him wanted to say no.
Michael had lied.
Hidden Evan.
Stolen years.
But Daniel had already seen what happened when adults treated children like possessions.
He looked back at Evan.
“Yes.”
The boy smiled faintly.
Then ran toward Michael.
Michael dropped to his knees.
Evan hugged him.
Daniel watched.
Painful.
Right.
Both at once.
Sarah approached.
Daniel turned.
She looked toward Evan.
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“That’s worse.”
Daniel gave a tired smile.
“I’m working on it.”
She looked at him.
“I want to be his mother.”
Daniel nodded.
“You are.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
He looked toward Evan.
“We figure it out slowly.”
Sarah began crying.
Daniel didn’t touch her.
Not yet.
Some things needed time.
Marcus walked toward them holding a sealed evidence envelope.
“Daniel.”
He looked over.
“What now?”
Marcus’s face was serious.
“We found something in William’s private archive.”
Daniel sighed.
“Can this family have one quiet day?”
“No.”
Marcus handed him the envelope.
Inside was an old photograph.
Daniel and Michael’s father.
Standing beside William Mercer.
Both much younger.
Daniel frowned.
“My dad knew William?”
Michael approached.
His face changed instantly.
“No.”
Daniel turned the photograph over.
Handwritten on the back:
FOUNDERS — 1999.
Daniel stared.
Northstar had officially been founded in 1999.
William Mercer.
Three intelligence officers.
And apparently one more man.
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“Our father.”
